Just come across two stories of people being treated leniently when caught speeding.

Arrow 63 year old Lord Howard, caught doing 113 mph, got total of 12 points and still allowed to drive. Info here Mad

Arrow PC Mark Bradley doing 83mph in a 40 only gets 3 points. Info here Mad

12 points should be a ban, you knew the risk, no exceptions.
Joe Public would get 6 points, what makes a PC exceptional?

How come there's this inconsistency with punishment for speeding?

I thought over 12 points WAS a ban?
Whats this with the 6? Is that not just for learners?

Uh oh, thats it for me then, I'm fucked, I think I've got captured twice in the last month *eek*

Mind you, the second time I havent got the paperwork yet. I have this THEORY about the triple-camera system in the Limehouse Link. I reckon if you speed on the last one (on the way out), they take the average of all three into consideration. I got flashed up there ages ago and I never got a ticket/summons. So when I got flashed last week on the end one, I'm wondering about this "average of all three cameras" malarkey.

But I'm not entirely certain of my theory yet. Time will tell, no doubt.

As far as i know, if you get over 6 points within a certain time period, you get a ban. Example. If you got 3 points today, then another 3 points 2 months from now and then another 1 point for something a month or so after that, you are banned. But if you have 6 points on your licence now, and then some more points say, 2 years from now. You're fine. I think.
I got 6 points on my provisional for riding a courtesy bike that my insurance didn't cover me for. I assumed i was covered because the shop told me i was. (the case against the shop got dropped in court for some reason by the way, and i got 6 points). My lawyer told me that it was lucky for me that i didn't have a full licence otherwise i would have lost it, and because the points are on my provisional, i can still get a full licence with the points. So i'll correct what i said earlier. I think if you get 6 points all at once, the judge can give you a ban. I think it's at his discretion with 6 points or over.

Just to clarify the 6 points. It's nothing to do with provisional licence or anything. Ordinary people would get 6 points for over double the posted limit. A police officer appears to only get 3 points. Why the difference? Mad

Oh, and 12 points is a ban, but the court/magistrates (probably on his lordships christmas card list) still allowed him to drive because it would affect his 'charity' work Rolling Eyes

Not as long as some of their other attributes if they can stick two fingers up to the rest of us like this Evil or Very Mad

[devilsadvocate]

Could it not be that their punishments were not unduly lenient but that most other punishments for speeding are in fact overly harsh? Smile

[/devilsadvocate]

In either case, punishments for speeding (and infact pretty much all punishments) vary massively. someone can get a 6 month jail term for the same offence that someone else gets (yet another) warning.

Yep, introduced because of a few people killed in a speed related accident (they tend to foget that they were joyriders so hardly likely to be put off by a speeding ticket).

All thr best

If you have had a full licence for less than 2 years and get 6 points or more you licence will be taken off you and you will resort to a provisional licence status and will have to take your test again.
If you have held it for more than 2 years it's not a problem.

Yeah.

I have a knack of managing to get thru the first two at the right speed, and then my mind wanders and I end up exiting at the western end doing over the limit, flashed twice.

Never seems to happen when I'm going east, curiously enough.

*scratches head in perplexity*

Thanks for the explanation why they installed them, though, Keith. I was wondering what had caused them to inflict that lot on us.
Thumbs Up

Any excuse for a quick buck and to make the roads less pleasant.

All the best

some people can get away with 12 point's and no ban,it's down to the judge(who he proberly drinks with at their lodge)you just have to habe the right reasons to keep your licence.
lose your licence and you lose your job works sometimes.
or you have a sick child that needs regular visit's to the hospital.(only to be used if true)they do sometimes let you still drive.

My mate managed to pull it off

Got caught by a speed camera which put him up to 12 points but managed to keep driving as he needed to for work, and he had 3 points due to be removed within 2 months. He was bloody lucky though!
