Will this cause the bike to lose power, I always thought that it did but looking at this auction surely you wouldn't pay 560 quid for pipes that lose you power:

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=25623&item=7969932380&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

https://i18.ebayimg.com/02/i/03/c3/7c/a0_1_b.JPG

I have access to proper pipe bending machines and welding equipment

I was gonna make my own pipes like this because their so hard and expensive to buy:

what are the complications of doing that?

Lose power?, of course they do, no back pressure at all, but it's a custom and 99% of their riders don't know any better. All show, no go and totally illegal sound wise. Rolling Eyes
Experiment with your own dude but just check the mixture when you're done to make sure it's OK and you're not doing any damage.

I run open pipes on my trike.
Never been stopped for having them fitted or failed an M.O.T with them on.
As for back pressure, 4 strokes dont need much.
Have you ever seen or heard of "tuned length" pipes?
They only have a silencer fitted to "tuned length" pipes to quieten them down.
The problem with open pipes is that you burn out your exhaust valves quicker.

Unsilenced pipes should be pretty damned easy to tune compared to ones with sidebranches, silencers and what have you on. Just make them the right length/ width and you're done. Smile

You ever stood next to a F1 car when it starts up? no silencers in those exhausts I can promise you.

I've seen this arguement for years and never really understood it.

If we need back pressure why do we fit less restrictive race cans to make power?

The Moto GP bikes have straight throughs, sometimes no baffles.. if it looses power I doubt some how they would use them Thumbs Up

Just wear your plugs, because it will cause hearing damage after a while.

This is a pic of my wifes Trike running open pipes with no baffles
at all , it runs lovely and has been set up to cope with them
and yes it is incredibly loud but thats a good idea as it gives you time to get out of her way when you hear it coming

You're all mostly missing the point trying to have a go, most with little idea of what they are talking about. I never mentioned anything about baffling at all I'm on about the STRAIGHT tube pipes as a reply to the initial post not the merits of silencing.
4 strokes DO need a bit of back pressure to make sure all the exhaust gases are "sucked" out.
The race can argument doesn't apply, the extra volume of any larger diameter than the pipe can, full or empty of baffles it matters not, fulfills that need to certain degrees of usefulness.
The optimum exhaust is a tube that runs from the exhaust port and gently tapers out along it's whole length which gives back pressure, think you'll find that this is the technology that the F1 type cars use as are some MotoGP bikes.
And as for

Yep I've heard of tuned length pipes but if you are fitting a silencer to the end of tuned length pipes you are exceeding the tuned length by a margin, the can is part of the length and also you are adding the back pressure by fitting a can. Of course you're burning your valves out quicker, see above you aren't getting the correct volume of exhaust gases removed with straight pipes.

So in conclusion please read posts properly and know what you are talking about before making ill informed replies

I thank you

4 strokes can and DO use backpressure from a "tuned" pipe to aid exhaust gases leaving the combustion chamber... this is exactly what EXUP and other such powervalves do.. they vary the pressure wave in the pipe so it bounces off the exhaust valve just BEFORE it reopens to let the gases out, producing a slight negative pressure to "suck" out the exhaust.

I was riding behind some guy on an old bike. His exhaust looked like he had chopped an end of a car exhaust off and stuck it on his bike. It was a right bodge job, looked dogey and was loud as f00k. I can remember thinking 'surely that cant be legal'... Exclamation

re. Babyblades post.

Hence why tuning a silenced pipe is much more difficult. You get a pressure wave reflection from any area change, so you'll get a far more complicated combination of waveforms bouncing up and down the pipe, far more difficult to work out the exact length you need.

It must be said that a lot of cruisers with straight through pipes w/o silencing look as though their appearance is the most important thing.

Think this hits the point. It doesnt matter that they are loosing however many horsepower because of the exhausts. They are never going to be used anywhere near hard enough for it to matter. On a race bike, gaining 10HP from tuning the exhaust might be of some use, on a cruiser it isnt.

And there I was thinking the rising piston on a 4 stroke cleared the burnt mixture out of the cylinder.

I think you might be mixing up 2 and 4 strokes but please show me your sources I'm willing to be corrected.

Back pressure over about 3psi generally equals a restriction I believe.
