Confusion?!?!?

firstly hi to all, secondly, why are licensing laws so damn confusing, maybe im too damn simple minded, im looking to get my license sorted, never ridden, havent done cbt or anything.
got cbt booked but after that where do i go from and are there age restrictions.???

Hi, there are age restrictions in the UK. I think you can't have your DAS before 21. and that you can only ride a 33hp bike with your CBT. I'm not very sure because I don't live there but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Your CBT lasts for two years. It allows you to ride any bike under 125cc with an output of less than 14.6 bhp, with learner plates on.

As far as full licences go, if you are 17 or over, but under the age of 21, you can only get a restricted licence. This allows you to ride any bike you like, so long as it is restricted to (or doesn't output more than) 33 bhp. You do your test on a machine with a capacity between 120? and 125 cc, which must be capable of doing 100km/h (62 mph). The restricted licence lasts for two years before you can ride anything you want to.

If you are 21 or over, you can do Direct Access. You do the same test on a machine which has an output of at least 46 bhp, and if you pass, you are allowed to ride anything with no restrictions.

If you are riding on a restricted licence and you reach 21 before the two years are elapsed, you can do Accelerated Access, which is essentially the DAS test to allow you to ride anything you like without restriction.

Age 16 - Ride a 50cc bike/Moped on a CBT certificate

Age 17 - Ride up to 125cc on a CBT certificate
- Take (and pass) your theory test, you can then take your practical test. This will give you a "restricted licence" enabling you to ride any bike AS LONG AS ITS RESTRICTED to 33bhp.
- After two years, you get a "full licence" and can ride any bike you want.

Age 21+ - Book a Direct Access Course (DAS) and pass, enabling you to ride ANY bike straight away.

Your CBT will let you ride up to a 125cc with L-Plates, not allowed pillions, not allowed on motorways.You can do a CBT from 16 years old, but at 16 i think you can only ride a 50cc, 17 for a 125

Next stage (A2 I think) means you can ditch the L plates, use motorways and ride a bike up to 33BHP. You stuck on that for 2 years then you can ride anything. You can do this from 17 years old

If your 21 or over you can do your direct access this is basically the same as the one above but it allows you to get on any bike, not be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years.

Well that's if your in the UK anyway!

How is he going to get to and from the test and get insurance on a bike that he doesn't have a licence for ?
