 |
|
The motorcycle community are being listened to? and not just being penalised with stupid regulations and petty bureaucracy?
| Derby telegraph wrote: | BUS LANE BOOST FOR CITY BIKERS
Motorcyclists in Derby will be the first in the East Midlands to use bus lanes in a bid to improve safety for road users.
Derby City Council is leading the 12-month trial scheme in two areas of the city.
If successful, the scheme could be expanded to other areas of Derby and other councils may follow suit.
Stan Werbinski, road safety unit manager at the city council, said: "We feel this is a positive move.
"Its aim is to improve safety on the roads, improve access and facilities for bikers and promote motorcycles as a convenient mode of transport."
It is hoped the scheme will help cut the number of accidents. In 2004, 10 people were killed and 138 were seriously injured in 134 accidents involving motorcycles across Derbyshire.
A Derbyshire police spokesman said that any measure taken to encourage further safety and reduce accidents was a step in the right direction.
He added: "In 2004, 25 per cent of people who were killed or seriously injured in Derbyshire were either motorcyclists or pillion passengers."
Last week, the Evening Telegraph relaunched the Think First road safety campaign in the hope drivers and other road users would act more carefully.
Rod Nuth, of Groves Nook, Chellaston, is the local representative for the British Motorcycle Federation and a member of Derby Motorcycle Forum, which supports the scheme.
He said: "I think it's an excellent move. It's a great aid towards safety by keeping bikes out of filtering in main stream traffic and it also helps to reduce congestion."
The scheme will cost the council about £2,000, which includes new signs.
The bus lanes in the trial are in Nottingham Road, Chaddesden, and Uttoxeter Road, Mickleover.
The scheme will be launched on May 23 by international athlete and keen biker Iwan Thomas, who lives in Melbourne. It follows guidelines set by the Department of Transport and the Regions.
The bus lanes will be monitored by roadside video cameras and cameras on board buses. Members of the Derby Motorcycle Forum will also be asked to record their observations and any incidents.
The scheme has been in the pipeline for 18 months and is the result of feedback from a consultation carried out involving bus firms, emergency services, taxi companies and cycle and motorcycle groups.
In the trial's first six months, people will be able to make objections to the council which will be considered in conjunction with the monitoring study results. |
Front page too, theres not many bus lanes about but its still good news, and if the scheme works well here (which i'm sure it will) it will be more leverage to make it a country wide thing, ev en then signage showing if it is or is not allowed is positive, the some do and some dont rubbish is rediculous.. ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

What happens when you get stuck behind a bus and can't go round the right hand side of it because there's chockablock traffic? Do you just have to sit behind it until it pulls into a stop? ____________________ I must not be a troll...

Im sure were allowed to use them in Newcastle because the bus lanes here are all painted and signed as "NO CAR" lanes, not "BUS LANE" so...
Could be easier than filtering though. ____________________ Yamaha SZR660 Caution to the wind, the throttle pinned! |

Great idea for the council really.
Shame the only bus lane around here is about 100m long
Still good idea for everywhere else though.

As Carvell said, the bus lanes around here have been usable by bikes for years - it works really well, and it's very rare to get stuck behind a bus in them ____________________ I spend all my money on bikes and beer, the rest I simply waste! |

There's one bus lane I know of here in Sheffield that we can also use - yes you get stuck behind buses when they stop, but the road in question gets so backed up in rush hour that it's get a huge net gain ____________________ Monster m600
