basicly ive a mate who wants to borrow my sv so he can sit his das test on it, obviously getting a years insurance just so he can pass a test is a bit much and was wondering if he could get away without it for an hour.

i cant remember even being asked to see insurance stuff but i was on a training school bike, anyone who sat the test on their own bike get asked to see insurance.

So let me get this straight. You are asking people who pay insurance, road tax and ride legally, for advice so that some little scrote can save a few quid doing his test?

Obviously not caring in the slightest that if he has an accident that the other party may not be able to recover the costs of the damage done both to bike and/or person.

I think some growing up is called for mate. Mad

If a driver/rider isn't insured, they shouldn't be on the road - simple as that. Why should eveyone else have to pay large premuims so some tight bastards don't have to?

Whilst I agree with chris and mike on this one. The answer to your question is : -

No they dont check your insurance document, however you sign a declaration before the test that says you are insured for use on this vehicle!

HTH

oh and dont do it, not worth it!

surely having him added as a named rider wouldn't cost that much? because as i see it you'll also get buggered if he's caught riding your bike without insurance.. not worth it for you, him or the extra cash he'd save.

problem is the bike has been off the road over winter and since the insurance ran out in october i havent renewed it yet, ive just bought{1} a TL1000S so the chances of putting a learner on that policy are remote.

if anyone knows a way to get a months insurance then cool he can buy it but hes reluctant to wast hundreds of pounds just so he can resit his test{2}. the reason he doesnt want to use a learner school bike is he thinks {3} that most of the instructors an glasgow are wankers who spend more time having a dig at you than teaching and since he knows how to ride doesnt need their shit.

{1} still havent taken delivery yet

{2} royal mail lost his paperwork to get provisional turned into a full licence and hes understandable pissed at the govenment right now

{3} and i tend to agree with him

A riding school would let you hire one of their bikes. You'd just have to pay for 2 hours worth of lessons and have an instructor go with you. Still cheaper than insuring him for a year.

Tell me something. You still gonna be friends if he bins your uninsured bike on the DAS?

if he bins it he has bought it but hes been riding for 3 years so i doubt he will during a test.

i was under the impression you needed to do the full course including 125 lessons which would take a week and cost at least £450

I did my test on my own Kawasaki GPZ550, Bennetts charged me £45 to insure it to do my test on.

Why don't you phone a few brokers up and ask them?

i just had a look at the website for the local instructors and they charge £60 for 2hours with instruction, i guess he could hire it get the instructor to go over the crap you never use like not getting on the bike with the sidestand down again then sit the test in the second hour.

You could ask on here (or at a local training school) to see if there are any instructors local to you that willing help for a small fee, but I do suggest that your mate gets insurance on the bike 1st to allow him to ride it to take his test, you / he will have to inform the insurance company that he is taking his test on your bike though, just in case he bins it. Just so you know, the insurance cover will only be 3rd party in most cases.

Other option is to get 125 and take test on that (with insurance), this would be less cost to you and him because...

1/ Insurance will be cheaper
2/ He will not have to replace your bike if he bins it
3/ No large fines to pay for false info given when he takes test (insurance).
4/ No large bills to pay 3rd party if involved in an accident.

There are other reasons to, too many to list here.

(Yes, some instructors are willing to teach for a small fee, you just need to find one.)

That's a good point, most places where you can pay in installments have to offer a 14 day cooling off period. Just curious, how is he planning on getting the bike to the test center? as he cannot ride it up there unless he's accompanied by a DAS qualified instructor.

nice one DAVO ..................

why do people think , they can just turn up for test with lil or no training is beyond me ...
and if you,ve a valid complaint against yer local riding school , then complain to the DSA .. who i can tell you from experience are more than happy to jump on cowboy schools, ........................ if yer wanna cut corners , yer taking the racing line .. and yer cant do that on the road , or in life.. yer might do it once , yer might do it twice , but sooner or later that bumper with yer name on it will come ..

f--k i sound like me dad true though

fact is he had already passed his test than had 2 years riding experience before the post office lost his docs, its not like he didnt get lessons the 1st time round its just and not having an accident after commuting through the center of glasgow daily should mean he is at least has a clue.

not sure about my mate but the reason i dislike the local rideing schools is they tend to be run by people who like to give orders. if someone tells me to do something i automaticly think they are a prick{1} and since i dont take shit from people in my life i didnt like paying for the privilege. i could see they had a method to break you down and build you back up but it really pissed me off and if i wanted to be in the army i would have joined.

{1} if someone asks me to do something a regularly go out my way to help however

Well, if he's already passed his test, why is he sitting it again?

You say it was two years ago, so even if it was his A2 license, by now he would be allowed to ride any bike he wanted, so there's no need for him to do his DAS.

(oh, and please stop doing that {1} thing, it makes no sense Wink )

The royal mail lost his test pass certificate.

Surely there's another option than resitting the test? seems a bit extreme for something that happens fairly often I guess....

No way would they make you resit your test just because that bit of paper went missing in the post. They will have a duplicate at the test centre anyway, just get back in touch with them.

Actually, I have just reread his post again and he says:

So Royal Mail lost his certificate 2 years after he got it? That makes no sense at all. I thinks someone has been telling porkies. Confused

You have to send off the certificate within 2 years anyway.

So if he left it till the last minute then it got lost I'd say he kinda deserves to re-sit.

Sounds strange but the guy who took me for my test read my documents like BA barrackus reads an in-flight safety card!

its a usenet habit i picked up to keep the flow of a point with the additional information referenced lower down so it could be checked if anybody cared, i accept it is a lot more appropriate in highly technical discussions but it becomes habit forming.
