They don't deserve to be alive in any case but my guess (or attempt at makeing this a slightly more believeable happening, because its seriously messed up..) is a bunch of smack heads wanting to sell it for a fix...

TBH, I think they took it while he was in hospital. So I bet the scene was, there's a WR400 or something sitting on its side at the side of the road. So they took it.

Obviously not condonable, but not as sick as it first seems.
