I've had my 2002 Hornet for about 3 months and the only thing that slightly annoys me about it is that I only get about 90miles out of a tank of fuel.
When I fill up it takes about 8.5 litres, but I've looked on the Honda website and on the Hornet spec sheet it shows the fuel tank capacity as 17 litres.

So how come I only get 8.5 into it? This is my first bike. Am I doing something stupid while filling it up?

Whats the deal here?

The Hornet unfortunately has a stupidly high reserve tap so do what most do - leave it on reserve and just set the trip each time you fill up.

Very Happy

First go to a local garage and buy a petrol can. Fill it and your Hairnet and zero the trip. Strap the can to the pillion seat and go ride until you run out. Take a note of the amount of miles you get from a tank full, then put the fuel in from the petrol can. You now have an idea of the tank range, so each time you fill up zero the counter and you should never run out of fuel again. Thumbs Up

I have an 04 Hornet and I manage 130 miles to a tank. Are you getting 90 miles to a mere 8.5 litres?

The 02 model hornet has a 16lt tank with a 6lt researve. I fill upi after about 100miles, a few weeks ago i did 75miles on track then another 30 home and i didnt need to switch to reserve.
Are you sitting on teh bike holding it upright when you fill? I find i can get about twice as much fuel in if i sit on the bike and gently rock it as i slowly fill, this gets rid of any air locks that have formed in the tank.

I don't sit on it when I fill it, but I do try and rock it a bit from side to side as I fill it (v gently!!).
I get about 8 litres in it and then have to dribble it in from then on, v slowly or it spills over the top.
The most I've got in it is just under 9l, and that was a long and laborious process.
I always fill up when I've done 85-90 on the trip counter - I don't use the reserve.

I'll try sitting on it next time, to give it a good slosh round as I fill.
