Dunno if this is common knowledge (I have only just found out), but you can now get your vehicle tax online. Here:

https://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/

Saves the hassle of dealing with grumpy, miserable post office staff who always tell me that I have brought the wrong documents!

I have never bought bike tax before but I assume it is the same as buying car tax ie take insurance cover note and mot.

Just thought I'd share, ignore it if you want Very Happy

But you would have to wait for your tax to arrive? tbh the post office is easier, if you have the right documents they wont moan at you for having the wrong ones??

I don't think I have ever got a tax disc without them moaning about something (or having to stand in a queue for hours while the twirlies get their pensions).

It only takes five days to arrive so you just order it a couple of weeks before you need it.

I still prefer the post office you can get it when you need it and there is no getting stuck in the post when royal mail decides to go on strike. i dont trust royal mail at all, they went on strike and my 350 pound bike frame was stuck there for 3 weeks.

Why cant they just send us a PDF tax disk that we print out and stick on the bike? Save on teh poastage and the printing costs and they can lower the price!

Good point, these days you can print your own postage stamps so why not print your own tax disc?

Sure, make them even easier to copy.

Why not just scrap the whole VED system. Hardly any real point to it these days, just an expensive to administer bureaucratic waste of time.

All the best

It amused me last year when I went into the post office to get my tax disc and I saw it was a fancier one with holograms etc so I though they would have some little printer or something to write my details on it. I was a bit unimpressed when she wrote on it with a biro! Very Happy

Sounds like you went to a very local post office, same with me, my local writes on the tax disc in biro, now if I went into Croydon to a main post office it would be printed not in biro.

I knew about this, but thanks for posting the link, cos you wouldn't believe how difficult it is to find from the DVLA website Rolling Eyes

I think tax discs spoil the look af a bike; I never display mine and have never had any problem. I keep it at home and so can always produce it if necessary.

..and there is NO legal excuse, also in some places Traffic Wardens can report you as well.

I tried to do the online method but it wouldn't work, mind you I use a real computer (Mac) not some windows rubbish. Very Happy

I ran out of tax on my XBR500 and had to work in town so couldnt leave it parjked up without a disc.

I sneaked down the road to some local shites moped (the little bastard had been stoning my mates windows the night before) and nicked his tax disc). lol he got nicked by a copper for speeding, then double whammied for no tax disc the next day lmao.

So instead of being done for no tax disc it would now be Theft, no tax disc and failing to display a disc - result!

Sneaky wee cheat I've been told about, I'm NOT sure of the legitimacy of it tho.. maybe someone cal clarify... if your bike has a cover on it, a traffic warden/polis isn't allowed (or just dont bother???) to lift the cover to see if you have a tax disk/read the no plate.

if it IS true.. and your tax is out.. make sure you take a cover with you till it's sorted..

lol

as long as its in date they dont tend to look too close, traffic wardens seem to turn a blind eye to bikes here in bristol, ive parken on pavements many times and they ignore it as long as you arent blocking it.

got my tax the next day however.
