inspired by an article by richard hammond in the daily mirror the other week he seemed to say that bikers who dont nod dont deserve bikes saying "As bikers we are more exposed and vunerable than car drivers so its natural that we salute others taking the same risks in pursuit of the same pleasures. Those who refuse to nod should have thier licences taken away. There not just being miserable sods thier spoiling it for everyone else."

i see his point though on my old bike and ped i would sometimes nod at bikers and get nothing in response which made me less likely to nod at the next biker i saw. its not a big deal but its one of the main reasons i bought a bike, to feel a sense of belonging to a club were the only membership requirement is 2 wheels and an engine, the sense of camaraderie, just wondered what you all do and any stories to tell Smile

I nod at all bikes, wake if i'm bored.

Grany ped riders i ignore as they NEVER nod back.
Younger ped riders i nod at if i'm bored, but will allways nod back if nodded to.

I get waves as well, that's really friendly. Very Happy

I don't see the point tbh you don't go around nodding at every car you see when driving. You only nod if it's the same model bike or car as yours.

Went to mfn tonight and a total 17 harley riders went past, not a single nod.... just thought what a bunch of cnuts Rolling Eyes (very few at all, quite depressing actually)

I nod at most peds and all bikes and trikes, some days every nod is returned, some days it seems none are...

I nod at anything with two wheels and an engine. If someone doesn't nod back it just makes me more likely to nod at the next one coming past.

You say there is a sense of cameraderie, but really in most cases there is f-all between anyone except them and their friends. It makes sense I suppose, but I'll stop if ever anyone's sat at the side of the road looking forlorn. Normally I've got all my tools and what have you with me, but there really haven't been very many people breaking down it seems.

I did stop by a guy on an R1 who was just sat on the verge and asked if he was okay. He just looked at me oddly (me with my dodgy chinese L plated thing), so I laughed and buggered off.

No doubt it'll be better when I get shot of the L-plates and get a plastic missile. Confused

'Round here it's almost always wave and be waved to. As for the hard-ass Harley crowd, I wave to them extra early so they have no choice but to either wave back or get the finger as they pass. Mr. Green

Not that it really matters too much but...

I'll nod in some cases, if it's ok to do so. eg:

-I'm not gonna nod if I'm approaching a junction with waiting machines (either to turn in or pull out)

-I'm not gonna either if I'm busy concentrating on the road.

I don't wave, but I may stick a foot out if going past someone on a faster road.So 1/2 of the time I wont, not cos I don't care about other bikers, but I care about not coming off and messing myself up.

No offence, but if you were riding that thing in your avatar, i wouldnt stop for you either. Wouldnt wanna be seen dead near that thing. Mr. Green

Seriously though, if i did see you (or anyone on a bike) i would stop to see if they need a hand - Even if its just a ride to the petty station for more fuel because they forgot they still had the bike in reserve...

As for nodding, i nod to every biker i see, some give a nod back, most don't. Its usually the ped riders/sunday riders that dont give one back, but im not too fussed if they dont TBH.

I did this last night and got completely blanked. I seem to get blanked everywhere. Maybe people are always p'ssed off or maybe it's because I only ever see other bikers in or around bike meets and they can't be arsed nodding anymore?

Seem to get more nods now i've passed my test and removed L-plates.

Had one biker look all over my bike (presumably to see if I was a learner), realised I wasn't and then nodded.

Me i'll nod to anyone.

Funny thing is I sometimes do it when im in the car.

I also now change down gears when coming to a stop in a car, and life savers. Perhaps i'm mad.

Yeah, the only times I don't "nod" are when I'm approaching a junction and have my attention elsewhere or when I'm doing over 100, as its a bit difficult on a naked bike Wink

I don't tend to nod though, I lift all 4 fingers off the right bar and point em skyward. Find it easier as I don't need to look at them.

Ahhh G'wan Ye Wimp! Laughing Admitedly it does make for an interestingly prolonged nod as you try to drag your head back from the wind resistance, but hey Thumbs Up On the way to hunstanton yesterday i was nodding to people on the other side of the central reservation on the dual caraigeway and i got nods back! Some even nodded first! Laughing

99% of car drivers aren't driving thru choice, they are doing the same as everyone else and going from A - B... these days, bikers ride because they want to... it's not simply a means to an end. There's a mutual enjoyment, and desire to ride.

We nod for aknowledgement of a mutual interest. It's the same reason you don't find car meet places in nice pubs on nice roads.. (okay, the "cruise" brigage are going in a similar direction, but again, they drive what they drive thru decision, desire and enjoyment). Can you imagine a pub carpark full of Mondeos and Vectras, with reps, and school-run-mums standing about with a gin and tonic talking about how bland-yet-capable the cars are? doubt it Very Happy

I nod, and you should all too. If we can nod and get along with people we have never met due to a common love the world is a better place.

Pfft, you just need to develop the 'nervous twitch' nod. Does the job and you don't need to really pay a single bit of attention doing it. Laughing

Now that's just stupid. I always thought the little Hammond fella seemed alright but for God's sake, is he that desperate to be accepted by people that he thinks that? Nobody's going to nod all of the time (well if they do they'll probably end up in a ditch) - live with it.

It is odd thing the nod

It is one of the feel good things about biking.

When out and about for a pleasure ride I always nod to bikes and the odd ped that showing the signs of a love for biking and NOT the shiny shell suit Chavs scum.

But I have to admit to not nodding when doing the dally commute into London I rarely nod but then there are so many bike you would be nodding all the time so it get reserver for the odd nice bike or lady biker.
