Well 2 weeks ago after having yet another break down on the bike i was about ready to give up. I posted a for sale notice on this forum and was seriously ready for the bike to dissapear. Then a bit of inspiration from Instigator and a few wise words from Keith got my mind back on track and convinced me to give the bike one last chance.

So after muhco debating, i downed my laptop and devoted around 8 hours of my free time to getting the GS running again. This included; cleaning the tank and flushing out the complete fuel system, cleaning carbs, cleaning spark plugs, repairing the front end lighting system with multiple wiring repairs / replacements and fitting the original light unit back to the bike.

Well after a long days bodging and swearing i finally finished and went to start her up... first time, no worries, started up and purred very smoothly. A rather large grin became my face and a rather large sense of satisfaction. With the bike back in mainly running order i decided to take it on a little run, it was fine, not a single problem, and have riden it to college and back, and the odd run out in the evenings all week since!

Yesterday i rode up to hunstanton with my girlfriend on the back and a rather over-packed tank bag. Got there with only one stop and not a single problem. The old GS was running very nicely. Spent the day at Sunny Hunny, watching the tide come in and the sun go down, walked along the sea front etc and naturally stocked up on a large amount of hunstanton rock. Rode home with a few more stops this time as we were both pretty tired Razz needed to wake ourselves up Laughing
Anyway, got home fine and parked the bike up in the garage.

Now today i get the old goose out and ride to college, not a problem, ride home at lunch and something doesnt feel right, by the time i had riden home from college again after lunch the clutch felt like it didnt even exist anymore. On removing the side casing i discovered that the entire clutch actuating mechanism is completely shot. The arm itself is wobbly, the link between the arm and the cable is snapped and only just holding on for dear life with a single strand of metal, and the bearing in the casing that allows the arm to pivot is completely blown out.

Now i am absolutely sick of this bike right now, it seems as soon as one thing is sorted another crops up. I havent been able to call up the local shop because its out of opening hours, to get a quote for the bits, but i dont even know if its worth it. If i can even be bothered to spend another second of my time on this bike! UGH What Should I Do!?!?!?

you tried on the gs500e forum to see if anyone has an engine to break> gs500's are very common so every breaker is bound to have an engine you can get access to. Also, keep an eye on ebay.

Apart form that mate, I say slog it out! Keep her! Very Happy

Keep the bike mate, I had a GS500 and absolutely loved it. They are great bikes when they're working properly!

At least it will be a lot cheaper and easier to fix than any other bike

I wake up some days and see it and think... "Ugh not that old thing again" walk up to it and say to myself "So come on then, what you going to break today then?" and others, when i sit and think about it i think... "Its not thaaat bad realy, see your not the ugliest bike in town, and you can shift quite a bit...".
I just get fed up with everything going wrong on it. One thing then another, although if i get nothing else from owning this bike, i will at least have learnt quite a lot about bike maintenance / repairs Razz

Ranger that would be great, what kind of price etc...?
