PostPosted: 14:34 - 13 May 2005    Post subject: Anti-theft idea - would this work? Reply with quote

Following on from the recent spate of attempted thefts and suchlike (and also because I was bored) I've been trying to think of some alternative anti-theft methods.

Unfortunately I don't have a garage and park my bike on my garden path outside my house at night, locked to a ground anchor. Now there is not really much more I can do - the garden is lit and a disc lock is always on the front - plus the bike is covered too. I'm still worried though Thumbs Down

I'm kind of thinking of some home made movement sensor - but not using electronics (I hate them see Twisted Evil ) maybe just something to wake me if the bike moves...

What do you reckon to the idea of a length of fine fishing wire threaded along the garden with a clip that I can attach to the bike when I park it up. This wire would be threaded through the garden to the house (only about 1.5m) then up the wall and into the bedroom window one floor up. Then this could be connected to a tin can etc filled with marbles or something, just something to make a noise to wake me.

I know I'm clutching at straws here but it's a sunny friday and I'm bored - so humour me Cool Mr. Green

too complex, and easily set off by people/cats/dogs tripping it by accident.

Why not get a personal attack alarm.. one of those ones with the pin you pull out to set it off. Attatch the alarm to a bit of the bike, and the pin to the cover..

if anyone tries to remove the cover, they set it off.

certainly loud enough to give them a fright, and loud enough to wake you.

something like this...

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20589&item=5973388417&rd=1

or these...

I've an idea. An airhorn in a large cardboard tube. A weight above the airhorn in the tube, held in place by a pin. The weight has some kind of rod attached to its base to press the button on the horn. Attach your trip wire to the pin, then if someone stumbles across the tripwire, the weight drops down the tube and sets the airhorn off. Hopefully enough to scare anyone off.

Alternatively, have the airhorn on one side of a seesaw. Have the other end weighted and held in place by a pin, which is pulled out by the tripwire. The other end goes down and the airhorn goes up to be pressed by something else.

Tried and tested classic, the rape alarm. Just attach the pull cord to something which has to move for anyone to nick the bike and hide it out of sight. Magic.

Anyone been watching too many cartoons recently?

Is it not possible to park the bikes on a patch of gravel? You'd soon hear it moving.

Has anyone thought of getting a load of these in bulk. We would reduce the price and all be happy. I know you can get them cheaper off ebay, but I am a dubious of that sometimes.

https://www.c-p-p.co.uk/product.asp?prodID=2106&REFID={B16CD5AA-B2AB-45D9-9DB3-25CA84D67C3A}

I could organise this if there was a high enough demand. I can get cheap postage at work also, so not a problem to distribute. I worked it out at aound £4.65 each if I purchased 20.

Pfft. The second of my ideas would be easy to make. A mechano set would do the trick fine.

cover your bike with tarpauling its very nosey when taking it off which helps.

Theirs a trick were you put black gafer tape on your bike horn to pin it down so when a pikey or little shit manages to crack the igntion barrel to start it the horn will blow, giving you some signal or some disturbace to cause an interest in whats going on with your bike.

Have a more expensive bike next to yours, then they definately won't go for it? Laughing

Anyhoo, I thought of maybe some sort of attachment to the bottom of the kickstand which is tripped to a high pitched annoying alarm or even tripped to the police station? Or maybe once they pull it off the kickstand !BANG! or its start playing music ie. Move B*tch get out the way, get out the way b*tch, get out the way!

Maybe you could get one of those police lines, do not cross tapes and wrap it round your bike, or alternatively get red and white barriers around the bike saying, "Under Construction"?

OMG Hennie! Im luvin the idea!! But instead of police tape, why don't you stick little bits of leaves and twigs onto it?! Like camouflage!!!
While I've been typing this ive had a brainwave! Listen! You know like on chip and pin credit cards?! Well could you not get like a chip tht goes on ur boot or summat, so when you flip the kick stand up, and its not the specific chip for the bike, then the bike won't start?!? Now is that not an amazing idea or what?! Msg Bk!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

LOL, who are you? "Hennies-Biker-Biatch"..... rofl! WTF?!?

First things first, I don't think the person stealing the bike would care about wearing boots or even riding it away. They probably won't be able to start it anyway, plus the money being put into the idea would be herendous! Secondly the thread created was too prevent use of electronic anti-theft devices, and yours may use a bit too much! lol... except the leaves idea! Thumbs Up

was a very good try though Rolling Eyes

Get a hand grenade, remove the pin & place the grenade inside a tin can. Stake tin can to ground. Attach string to bike & the other end to the grenade.
If someone tries to steal your bike you can just hose em into the gutter after the shrapnel has stopped flying...

The idea of selotaping the horn down so that it goes off when the ingition is turned on sounds good for high street parking.

Not so useful for your garage though as I guess they would just roll the bike to the end of the street?
