I'm just starting getting into bikes, and have my DAS test next month. I was thinking about getting a decent bike straight away, but a lot of people have said to me that I'm best getting a cheaper bike first whilst I get used to handling a bike. They say that I'm gonna come off it at some point, and I'm gonna be really upset if it's on a really expensive bike (which is correct, I would be upset). I'm just wondering how true this "you're gonna come off as some point" is - so what better way to find out than to start a poll Very Happy

I think 5 years is quite a long time not have an off, especially if you are a new rider!!! Depends on how much and how you ride I suppose.

In my first year I came off 3 times. Nothing serious thankfully. I was and still am on a CBR400.

It happens.

to be honest if you ride vey carefully then you are unlikely to come off, but as you are learning you are bound to make mistakes.
for me as an example i learned by DAS and i passed in feb, after i passed i wanted a ZX-6R (£2500) but due to finacial reasons i coulds, so i bought a £600 yam' diversion. anyway i took the long way to work one morning it was cold and frosty, i low sided it going on a slight bend coming onto a motorway slip road, putting the power on to soon whilst lean't over! as a result about £60 of damage and a small hole in my gear! if i had the ZX its would have been a hell of a lot worse, minus crash bungs the plastics would have got screwed. plus on a cheap bike you won't mind treater roughly!
my advice if you do have the money just leave it in the bank a little bit longer, get cheap bike for about 6 months or so then get a nice shiny bit of metal!

I put 5 years because I was curious if many long term riders had actually 'never' come off.

I have been riding for over seven years now, on and off.

As far as coming off bikes go, I reckon over 40 times now, maybe more!
My first bike was the worst, at least 10 times I reckon.

If you want a bike for the pose factor and to pootle around on, then you're a lot less likely to have an off; though you may find that you don't have 'good' survival instincts if you are put in a dangerous situation.

If you want a bike for the fun; speed, handling and performance then you probably are going to get to know the tarmac at some point.

(Said while touching wood Smile )
Oh and I haven't broken any bokes yet, probably the worst was a nasty concusion with after effects lasting a year; that was more down to bad helmet fit though, something that is very important!

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=44105

I ran a poll on this a while ago. The result was quite clear in that almost 70% of those polled had dropped their first bike. It doesn't need to even be a lowside, even just getting the balance wrong when wheeling it about can bring you down on a heavy bike. With plastics to break, even that can get expensive if you're unlucky.

As far as coming off at speed, two binnings, one superman impression into the verge and one unknown resulting in a broken wrist requiring a screw to put it back together, and the upper end of the radius cracked longitudinally.

I came off today as it happens. Mad

I was practising my U-turns on the NSR in a quiet country road, and it just started slipping under me. I was only going at 2mph Laughing so there was no real damage apart from the front brake lever snapping at the end (the crash bungs took the fall). Phew.

Some really friendly people came out of there Nissan 4x4 and helped me pick it up, they were also into biking. Thanks guys. Thumbs Up

Note to self: NSR is too hard for U-Turns on a narrow country road.

I started riding in 1999 and waited until 2004 to come off. And that was on the track so it doesn't count. Shifty

Riding for > 5yrs - Come off unscathed.

I was riding almost ten years before I finally came off, which was last summer. Eight of those years were riding off-road mind, but you didnt say it had to be on the road. Wink

Came out relatively ok though, dislocated shoulder and the usual cuts, bumps and bruises. Thumbs Up

Riding since August, came off once, in January. Also dropped it in a back lane, just broke too hard and front wheel decided to slide a bit. Embarassed

Come off 3 times, on 2 different bikes.

Very little damage to me either time, not even bruised for two of them, and just bruised for one of them.

I agree you shouldn't buy something super tarty as a first bike. I'm not too bothered about crashing on my XJ, but it's still an excellent bike.

Came off twice. Once on my CBT about 3 seconds after Id got on and once on a patch of diesel on a roundabout in the wet about a week after getting my GS125. The CBT centres yamaha125 was unhurt, my GS got a broken indicator and scratched exhaust. I got very little off both. The Enfields stayed unright so far, hope to keep it that way.

On a road bike I had a bad crash about 13 years ago. Came of my mates Z650.
Broke my thumb, hand, wrist and arm. Damaged my knee, skin of arm and leg.

I had pins in my hand for 3/4 months and about a year physio.

I came of Race bike 3 weeks ago at about 150MPH, I was badly winded and hurt my knee, right wrist was swollen, left index finger swollen and knocked my shoulder. Shoulder is still sore.

As for off road bikes (Scramblers and Trials) I probably fell off every time i went out. Thumbs Up

It's interesting how so far, not one person has said that they've been riding for over 5 years and not come off Shocked

It's also worrying that most people that have been riding for over 5 years, have broken bones because of it! Embarassed

This was my point at the beginning. Wink

It will happen. Either get a small cheap sports bike and get crash bungs (and hope) or a cheap naked bike first. Thumbs Up
