It had a small backfire, but then the battery was going very dead and as much as I tried I couldn't bump start her on my own.
It's a 2001 faired model and I only got it from the dealer just over a week ago. Crying or Very sad

Something I did different last night was leave the kill switch engaged - I don't know how but could this have drained the battery sufficiently overnight?

I'll give the dealer a bell after 9 and hopefully they can arrange something...but I'm in work all day.

Wasn't sure if this was workshop worthy...sorry if it's in the wrong place.

Cheers
Adam

Dont leave the kill switch in the off position, it alous water to get onto the contacts and corode them, wouldnt have an effect over night but long turn use may damage the switch.
As for a flat battery side pannel off, and battery charge on. Leave it for half an hour and try to start, should start first or second go.

I'm at work but I'll be trying to bump her after work...with someone's help this time.

I called the dealer (Fins in redhill) and once I get her there they'll stick a new battery in for me.

Cheers

Hi

Hope you managed to get things sorted with the Hornet. I just wanted to say that I had something similar happen to mine. Left for a couple of days the thing wouldn't start. It cranked over fine for a while but though it coughed a couple of times it just wouldn't fire properly. Eventually the battery went flat. I had one of those chargers you can safely leave connected (conditions battery or something) so connected it up and left it. About 4 hours later she fired no problems. Very Happy

Since then I have always left the charger on and have never had problem starting her up (even after a two week holiday). Thumbs Up

I guess that once the battery voltage drops below a certain limit there just isn't enough to power the CDi/coils and produce a big enough spark.

The kill switch shouldn't have anything to do with the battery going flat, it just breaks the circuit feeding the CDi and starter (fed by an ignition supply), which is lost when the key is turned to off.

If you haven't got one - buy (and fit) one of the charger/conditioner things as soon as you can, I'm sure it will help. Thumbs Up

Well I went back after work and it started no problem - it was much warmer by then and the battery had some time to recover I guess.
The dealer replaced the battery under warrantee which was the original one from 2001 with 23k miles so I guess it was it's time to be replaced anyway!

I use the bike frequently enough to not worry about getting an optimate...and in any case my garage doesn't have a power supply and is separate from the house.

Cheers for the advice.
