Well yesterday I did the most idiotic thing I could possible do. Let me tell you how my day went.

Ok I start my bike up... sounds like the battery is dying (slow starter) so bike wont start, I give it 10 more minutes and try again still... no luck.
So I have a look through the manual, it says nothing about this problem so im sitting there confused, so I phone my dad.

I phoned him and told him the situation and made him hear the problem, he told me the battery sounds lifeless so jump start it.
"Ok" I said, ask my sisters boyfriend to use his car to jump start my bike. Took the seat off and jumped started it but it would only run on choke.

Phoned up my dad again (about the 7th time now) and asked him if he can come up and have a look, so hes on his way up im sitting next to the bike for 30 minutes waiting for him to show.

He pulls up has a little look jumps starts it again steps back for a second and turns the fuel to reserve, bang the bike is running fine.
He then looked at me and said "Lewis you made me drive up here just to switch the fuel to reserve?"

At this point I felt so stupid I could of slapped myself, since yesterday I had the piss taken out of me because of one simple mistake!

Sad

Everyone's done it at least once. Just not everybody has called their dad out to fix it. Wink

You certainly won't forget the reserve again. Very Happy

Now to forget the killswitch. Who hasn't done that?

haha similar story but in reverse, my dad was fixing my bike (well diagnosing the problem). He is 41 full car licence full bike licence and a sergent in derbyshire constabulary. im at my girlfriends just watching TV and he calls me to come home as my bike wont start, not even trying to start. he says hes recharged the battery all wired properly kill switch not on fuses ok but it wont even begin to start and i need to come home, so home i go driving all the way. finally get home go into the garage see the bike there on the stand with my bemused dad next to it, turn the key in the ignition and the neutral light doesnt come on.

"Dad..................................It's in gear"

Shifty

One of the first times I ever used my RS125 I was caught out by that gremlin! At a petrol station with a mate, filled bike, went to start the bike.. Nothing happened. Spent ages trying to start it up, running round the forecourt looking like a right numpty trying to get it bump started. In the end, we phoned a friend who is an expect with aprilia's, first thing he said "kill switch." Laughing Total idiots, but at least I know never to use that again! Mr. Green

Meh, we all make fools out of ourselves at some point. Once you've got over the embarrassment and the red face has gone, you just laugh at yourself. Razz

I try not to use the kill switch for that very reason.

I also put my bike onto reserve for the very first time today.

My favourite one was, on the MZ you can't hold the clutch in to kick start, because pulling the clutch in disengages the kick start (not quite sure why). But that baffled me for quite a while.

And another one, I recently broke the clutch switch on the MZ, and changed the clutch, whilst playing with the new clutch I stalled at a set of lights. Had to find neutral before I could restart, because I'd taken the clutch switch off. *Gaz rolls eyes*.

Although what makes you feel like a real idiot is when you forget to change the fuel tap back onto main when you fill up again. You hear the bike spluttering, reach down to switch onto reserve and find the tap is already there... Evil or Very Mad

Done that before. Had to push the bike about 2 miles down the motorway. Shocked Mad

Top tip. If you tilt the bike right over towards the fuel tap, you can usually get another four or five miles out of it. There is usually a bit of fuel sat in the opposite side of the tank 'over the top' of where it goes over the frame tube/airbox. Tilting the bike right over (so it is almost flat on the ground) causes this fuel to slosh over to the side the tap is on.

If you want to feel like a complete twit, try doing a u-turn on an 1100cc beast about 10 minutes after getting new tyres fitted. Needless to say I ended up kissing tarmac and the bike now has a badly scored belly ban and a big chip out the tank. It could've been worse though, the crash bung, took most of the impact.

My gixxer doesn't have a reserve tap. Just a stupid flashy light on the dash.

I have to use my odometer to guage how much fuel I have left.

Atleast you have some way of knowing you were nearly outta juice.

My (Stolen!) DT didnt have anything for fuel, used to fill it up when it got down to half a tank just to make sure i never accidently ran out when i went for my little rides (Ranging from 30 mins to 3/4 hrs)...

Cant be arsed using the odometer, easier to just open the tank up and have a look for yourself i think. Guess im just used to doing it after spending so much time on off-road bikes...

Dunno... none of us can change our rear wheel by tipping our bike on it's side and using one single solitary socket. Wheel comes off, spare wheel goes on... ten minutes max you're on your way again.

Then the way the wheel splits in half so you can change the inner tube easily... bloody genius! Cool

Try riding an unfamiliar bike, at night, down a country lane and fumbling for the main beam. Bike suddenly dies and there's the ohhhh bugger moment. Thank god for a ray of moonlight to see I'd caught the little rocker of a kill switch Rolling Eyes Very Happy.

Where I used to work this guy thought it would be funny to go to the motorcycle parking bay and turn all the kill switches on! Shocked
Not only did I fiddle with my bike for a good 10 minutes to find the problem, loads of the other bikers did to.

Obvioulsy we weren't too impressed by this, so we managed to get hold of bike keys and move his bike round the other side of the carpark! Laughing

I had to push my bike home 3 times due to running out of petrol. It used to be so annoying as I could still see and hear petrol in the tanks. Then one day I noticed it said reserve on the fuel tap. Sometimes you don't realise how heavy the bike is until you have to push it 3 miles home, worst thing is that its near enough uphill all the way.
