I have forgotten my helmet both accidentally and intentionally.

Bizarrely, at speed it is a lot quieter without a helmet.

American safety gear...Sunscreen and wrap around shades!

yep I have rode off down the road with no helmet and made a U turn when I got to the first place I could about 50 meters down the road, I have actually left my key in the seat lock several times but my worst lapse of memory was leaving my helmet clipped on to the pillion peg over night at work and have the sky open up and fill my helmet with water, dirt and saw dust from work Embarassed never do that again! I am amazed at how many bikers drop a glove when they climb off and walk away from there bikes I have chased after plenty of bikers to deliver their dropped glove that they did'nt even realise was missing and I have done it my self twice so far and I reckon I will do it again too! how else am I going to have an excuse for buying those nice MOTO GP lookalike gloves oops I am swaying off topic here time to bail out! Yeh, rode around my block once, just to see what it was like.

Felt seriously unsafe and really exposed.

I have never done it before, but I have had many reoccurring dreams that I notice mid ride that I have forgot to put my helmet on and i'm miles from home. So I carry on riding hoping that a police car doesn't catch me. Anyone else ever dreamt of it before?

something tells me legal probs would be the least of your worries if you go down without a lid.

i seem to recall reading that not having a helmet was a £90 fine with no points but that may have been for a pillion

Eeer! I learned the hard way....

I was selling a MotoX, a guy came to look at it so I showed him what it could do, just a quick blast up and down. Then SMACK it hisided me into a fence head first.

And This Happened

(Nasty Picture Warning)

Lucky it was only a flesh wound and was soon stitched back up with no damage apart from a scar.

ALWAYS wear a helmet no matter how far you are going....

Hi

Yep, ridden off twice without my helmet on by mistake.

You would be surprised. Yes you are one hell of a lot more likely to survive an accident wearing a lid, but you still have a good chance even without a lid. Far less difference than the safety nazi induced paranoia we now suffer from would have us believe.

All the best

I've never rode off without my lid, but I often go out to the bike locking the house up and then unlocking the bike only to notice i'm missing it. Never lose gloves as i'm into the habbit of putting them straight into my helmet whenever I take them off(put them on seat of the bike whilst undoing lid though).

I wouldn't rule out riding without a helmet if the law was changed, as I get a real buzz from sitting on the bike whilst it's running without my lid on. I sometimes meet my mate in a city centre pub before he goes to work; It's a rock pub and conveniently has a free bike parking bay outside. The route up to where he works is just a couple of roads that cars don't use so several times i've ridden up at walking pace whilst my talking to my mate who holds my lid for me. It's a bit dodgy though as the main police station for Nottm including the traffic police garage/hq is about 2minutes walk away Confused

It feels really good riding along slowly without a helmet though. It just feels natural.

I'd have been dead without it. There's no way I'm riding without a helmet for anything other than walking pace jaunts up and down the lane.

Every time you get on your bike you're taking a risk, yet we all do it as the balance between enjoyment/need and the risk is a fair one.

Personally I would consider riding without a lid when going for quiet runs on country roads pootleling along - The enjoyment on a sunny day would balance with the risk. It's a personal decision though and one that perhaps should be placed with the individual, rather than having it dictated to us by "our" government that we must wear helmets.

Agree that there's a risk of coming off on a 5minutes ride down to the shops, but not that this is the same risk as on a rideout. I came off over the weekend and suffered only a swollen ankle and knee due to wearing full gear. However for about 400-500miles before this i'd been riding in denim jeans(mostly medium-length runs inc some motorways: stoke, donny, coventry, matlock, leics). The risk of coming off when pushing it in the twisties on a nice Sunday afternoon in the Peakdistrict is clearly alot higher than when riding to get somewhere on straight roads. I don't need other people to tell me that i'm taking too bigger risk by riding in jeans because i'm aware of the risk and it's me that will decide when it is too great.
