Hi All

My current tax disk expires on the 31st of this month and the bikes first MOT is also being done on the 28th. If the bikes passes, i can get the new tax disk the same day. If it fails, i will have to wait a few days/ week for the MOT retest.

How long do the DVLA give you before issuing the £80 fine? Somebody told me it can the day after it is due. I've had my bike for 3 years now and this is the first time its needed an MOT so taxing it has never been an issue.

Cheers,
Lee.

Why not get your new tax sorted before the 28th?

It's a bit hit and miss with the tax office TBH.

I have been fined twice (for my car in summer) by the b*stards the first time it took AGES for the fine to arrive, the second time I think it took about 4 weeks!

Remember that this is a government agency that we are dealing with, so it depends on how short of cash they are at the time..... Evil or Very Mad

Good example is that my new car has been sitting on my drive for the last 3 weeks, cos I have been waiting for the V5 to arrive so I can tax it online, but I have not yet received either the V5 or a fine for the non-SORN of it (a matter that I will take up with them, should they send me a fine Evil or Very Mad ).

I should think you would be o.k for at least a couple of weeks though, but don't quote me on that!

Hi There

My logbook states the bike swas first registered on 01.06.02 and the tax renewal form sent in the post states that i need a valid MOT certificate in order to get the disk. It was never mentioned on the previous renewal forms because the new disk was to take effect from a time within the first 3 years. Because the new disk would take effect from the 01.06.05 which is also the day when the bike passes the 3 year old mark, i.e needs a test certificate?

I was going to go to the post office in town and try my look with just the renewal form and my insurance certificate. If they were to question me , i would state that at this time, the bike is not 3 years old for another week or 10 days but i am not sure this would work which is why i haven't bothered to try.

Cheers,
Lee.

Simple solution. You have had a reminder for the tax disc by now right? If not you will do soon. You can buy a new tax disc up to two weeks before it falls due using the renewal form. Tax the bike before the MOT is due.

If you can't tax it beforehand without an MOT and it does fail (any reason why you think it might? 3-yo bike should be fine if you've looked after it) all you need to do is SORN it using the reminder on the 31st, then go back & tax it with the form from the post office (might be a V90 or V92 but don't quote me cos I can't be arsed to look it up).

They then can't fine you for having no tax as you have declared SORN & complied with the continuous licensing regulations.

BUT - if you do this & ride it before you re-tax it & get caught, be prepared for a much bigger fine than just for not taxing it.

Hi

I think i will try my luck tomorrow with the renewal and insurance forms. If they will not take it, i have lost nothing and will just have to wait until Saturday when hopefull the bike will pass its MOT.
I just thought i'd ask you peeps to save me a wasted journey. Very Happy

Cheers

On the back of my renewal form it says:

"Valid Vehicle Test Certificate - if required. - It must be valid on the day the licence comes into force."

You can renew the tax in 5 minutes online (I just have), so you can do that as soon as it has been MOT'd. They say they'll get the new tax disc to you within 5 working days, but it is an offence to drive or keep a vehicle on a public road without a valid disc, even if it has been relicensed.

Hence, there's only the 3-4 days wait for the new disc to worry about, but the only way those will be a problem is if you get stopped by the police.

Tax it online, It's way easier than aurguing with the jobsworths down the P.O.

If you need the MOT it won't let you tax it, that way you have wasted all of 5 minutes instead of 5 hours in the high street! Thumbs Up

No grace period any more, no Evil or Very Mad .

If you tax it before its MOT is required, you should get it no worries.

I had a car (admittedly off the road) untaxed for about 6 weeks when I went on hols to New Zealand and never got notification or fine letter...

The renewal form does say the MOT must be valid when the new licence comes into force. (ie two days after the first MOT is due)

If you do it at the post office, they might not realise, but I reckon the online version would catch it.

Regarding that sorn if you need it the Post Office can do it there and then for you just get and keep the receipt. If it fails on the 28th book it in every day until they re-do it and if you do get picked up on a camera somewhere tell em it was going for the MOT. A set of loose leggings ( bloody awful weather just now?) hanging from a bungee clip over the number plate might help aswell.

Another thing about those Sorn statements I have supplied three recently, all sent when I registered the bikes in my name (as they are all in bits ) and I have had to re apply on every one as they lost the originals in the system and they do not back date them. So I will now send any future slips seperately by registered post as it's the same price as a stamp.

Good luck with the MOT
