Hi guys and gals.

I really want to start racing but dont know the ins and outs of it, is it a case of just getting a bike and getting stuck in?

Is it really expensive to make a hobby of it?

Will i be able to stick at it on apprentice wages?

Any feedback will be great!

Have a word with G on the forum, he's just started racing & will know what kind of financial input is required. Don't think it's cheap though.

very expensive, a engineer at my last job used to do it back in the 80,s on GPZ1100,s till he crashed and nearly lost a leg (massive metal rods holding it together now). they used to spend silly amounts of money on bikes and parts provided by there sponsers.

Right, I started racing because I found I was becoming a bit constricted by track days; not enough people to chase and that was the bit I enjoyed the most.

If you've got some consitancy in racing you should always be chasing someone a bit faster.

There are several schools of though on starting racing.
Mine would be that if you can, do track days first. Only get into racing when trackdays don't offer you anything more.

For the amount of track time you get, trackdays are much better value.
Also, being a fast road rider has a little relevance to the track, but the probabilty is that you'll still be slow by track standards.

There are some slow people racing this year in my club, but in my opinion they're wasting their money as they probably aren't getting much faster, when they can't catch up with the faster people to learn from them.

Have you got a road bike?

Well i'm 17, coming up 18 in june and have had a full licence since last june.

I'v been saving up enough to get a decent road bike like a drz400sm or other similar bike.
I'm on a ped at the moment and have been since i turned 16 Crying or Very sad

Maybe supermoto trackdays and races would be a lower, cheaper level to enter the racing world than superbike racing?

Why not try something like moto-x? Its cheaper than track racing and you can just turn up and ride at most tracks...?

I never considered it before, thanks.

Most of the racers that we watch nowadays come from a moto x background anyway so there must be some way of making the transition from dirt to road.
