Junctions/Lights - Hold the clutch in...Or Go into Neutral??

I used to just keep the clutch in and keep it in gear, i think thats why im on my 3rd clutch

Now i tend to use neutral..

How about you lot?

i keep the clutch lever pulled in and in gear at lights etc..

unless i'm waiting for a while i'll slap in in neutral.


surely holding the clutch lever right in wont wear your clutch down?

I tend to go for the neutral option, but as the Benelli is impossible to put in neutral when at a standstill I generally holding the clutch in.

I was always tought to sit there in gear with the clutch in, left foot down and right foot on the brake.

Started to learn to drive in my mum's car and she keeps telling me off for holding the clutch in...so I've no idea what you're meant to do in a car.

Best way and most secure way, is left foot down, rear brake on clutch in.

Just incase you get shunted from behind etc.


Having the clutch fully in wont put any wear on the plates at all.

Milo - depends on when you were taught ,

years and years ago when car gear sticks were dead awkard you shift down as you approach the lights , then into neutral , but when I was taught at the end of the 90s it was if the lights have just turned red stick it into neutral , if they are already red clutch down into first and be ready to move off,

though I much prefer to keep it in first clutch in the lights here have a very short green period on my route home , even though the bike can massively out accelerate cars its even better to have a slight advantage.

If youve got the rear brake on you should stop if you get shunted, i did.



Sitting at roundabout, big white van behind, car in front pulls off, i move off to white line, rear brake on left foot down, white van carries on accelerating not seeing that ive stopped, hit me at 10mph *bang* only went around 2 metre's, all down to the rear brake.

if i was to get shunted from the rear i think id rather be in neutral. with foot over the brake, at least you could do a controlled roll forward rather fly off. ive also heard that even with clutch in the plates still rub slightly

Depends on the queue if there's not many vehicles there, then it's held in gear, if there's quite a queue, then it's in neutral.

I was taught by my instructor to keep it in gear and use the clutch.

I think he mentioned something about it being part of the test too. But could be wrong.

It depends on the amount of time. If I know it's going to be a fair while then I'll put it in neutral, but still cover the back brake.

Otherwise, clutch in and wait.

I dont think there is a right or wrong answer, completely personal preference.

You're not under complete control of the machine with it in neutral, with you drumming your favourite tune on the tank. That doesn't matter a stuff unless you're doing the test. I tend to put it in neutral if I'm waiting for a long time, but normally just pull in the clutch.

Clutch wear with a correctly adjusted lever pulled in should be minimal to negligible.

I wonder if it is a city commuter thing

I notice a lot just clutch rather then popping into neutral but looking about at the lights in London nearly every one is in neutral unless the lights are short duration or about to change.

But then when I am out for a blast I don’t think I have ever popped the bike into neutral rather then just sit there with the clutch in.

I think that in itself is the difference between city riding and riding for pleasure.

City is waiting at lights with short runs to the next set of lights and pleasure is nice long runs with the odd stop at the lights and I think that what will dictate your clutching preference.

depends whre I am....

if I'm at the front of the queue, I'll sit witht he clutch held in, so I canget away sharpish... if I'm further back.. I'll sit in neutral, knowing I've got plenty time to get going.

Sometimes I'll knock it into neutral and wait or I'll keep the clutch in. I nevere actually really think about it to be honest.

The last time this discussion came up, someone mentioned the idea of keeping it in gear so you can get away if someone looks like they're about to rear end you. If you've got a car or two behind you stationary, then they will soak up a vehicle forgetting to stop. If you've got no-one behind you, it's possible you'll need to get out of there sharpish.

Because I still haven't got out of the habit of that stupid 'change gear, swop legs' shuffle thing I tend to sit there with the clutch in. I know I'll wear out my clutch (like I did last time!!) so I'm trying to sit in neutral with my right foot down and front brake on. Only trouble is I find I can't pull away with my right foot down (because I'm a bit dim)!

leave it in gear, constantly looking in my mirrors, if our bright red audi estate car can get rear ended at a set of lights....
my weeni nsr has no chance,im ready for a quick get away...

but tends to stretch my clutch cable a bit.
