Headlight Protectors! Illegal?????

Im after getting a tinted black headlight protector for my bike.

Are they Illegal??

Ive been told only the clear white ones are legal, if so and the others are illegal whats the chance of being pulled for having one on and what punishment are you likely to recieve.

Yes they are illegal, they carry the same penalty as a tinted visor AFAIK.

I *think* they make your bike not road legal so its a even bigger penelty.

They are also pretty pointless IMHO, the coloured ones look especially bad.

i think they are technically only illegal if you turn your headlights on while using them. like tinted visors.. take them off for nighttime use Smile

Coming back from North West 200 on Sunday, one of my mate got pulled, Cop asked him the usual is it yours, are you insured stuff, then said " Right there's 4 things I can do you for, if you can tell me what they all are i'll let you pick one and i'll just do you for that" They were
Not for road use can
red light protectors
small numberplate
and red visor

He chose the number plate and got a £30 fine. He asked the cop what would have been the worst one to pick and he said the light protector as it's the most dangerous on the road, esp being red!!!

Anything other than an amber or white light is illegal facing forwards, and for a very good reason. Light protectors in either of those colours (amber or transparent) should be fine. The dual sport BMW's commonly have a transparent perspex light protector.

These comments are true, but i have been using a solid black head light cover, no light gets through at all.

I use it on the front of my bike, as it is all black too! If the cops stop me, I'd simply state that during the day I don't use my lights, therefore there are no lights shining forwards with or without the protector!

If they ask me to take it off, then I will. At night it's off anyway!

Theyre certainly handy though, a belgian guy came into the shop after a back tyre on his bmw boxercup (replica?) and he said hed been through 4 headlights on his trip already so he invested in a clear one Shocked

Similarly if you saw red lights to your right as you were about to come out of a junction in the dark. Assuming fairly enough that they are going in the opposite direction, you pull out and get T-boned. Confused
