Blasted bike has done it again!!!

I've gotta take the hint that my bike career has been giving me. I went for a ride around town for a couple hours, then stopped for a picnic lunch and filled up again ready for a trip. My friend (NatV4) phoned me and suggested I go further afield, maybe try Hastings on my own. So I set off, really excited because I'm finally getting the courage to take my bike out of the M25 region into unknown territories...

... except I didn't get to the M25 because the bike suddenly lost it's gears, and by that I mean that any revving made no difference to how fast the bike went. I quickly did my usual (getting used to this) pull up to the side of the road, put it back in first, tried to pull away but nothing. Tried again in second, clearly the bike just wasn't connecting somewhere.

A couple hours later I'm loaded up in a van thanks to my NCI coverage, not too unhappy because I've done all this before and it doesn't really bog me down because at least the bike hasn't injured me in all its problems. I chose not to go to Brands Hatch this time and opted for the Aprilia place in Croydon, which turned out ot be a good one because the chap in there has agreed to check it out tomorrow morning and call me straight away.

All in all, I'm not too stressed tonight, a little annoyed because my test is coming up in 3 weeks time and if the bike isn't sorted by next week I'll have to cancel before they steal my fee.

Anyway my point is, with all these breakages and general failure to have a normal, working bike maybe the powers that be are trying to tell me something...?

Gearbox problem, so just the same on a 4 stroke.

Haven't you had exactly these problems recently? If so take it back to the people who failed to fix it and tell them to do it properly.

Only possible hint is to learn more about how the whole bike works so that they cannot bullshit you.

Sounds more like a clutch problem to me which at least shouldn't be so expensive.

i heard aprili's can spit out gear selectors? i kno wave2k's rs went and so did my mx50, but aprilia warantee isnt worth the paper its written on...esp. by inmoto in croydon.

Chain hasn't fallen off, lol, we checked! I think it's clutch problems but definately not related to previous work done on the bike. It selects gears but just won't pull when releasing the clutch.

sounds like the clutch then, have you tried letting the clutch cable adjusters in all the way and see if you get any bite?

Hi

The Aprilia gearbox normally seems touch enough. Could well be the clutch, and the clutch is a doddle to change on the RS125. One occasional problem is the plate which mounts on the inside of the clutch cover and operates the clutch, and this can wear through.

slack clutch cable? often best looking at (and if in doubt replace) the cheapest/simplest things. Those symptons sound very similar to what my bike was like when the clutch cable was slack and wasn't engaging the clutch.

Checked the clutch cable as soon as it happened and no difference, and the guy at the Aprilia place did the same... see I do know my stuff!! Heehee

Sounds like a very similar thing that happened to me the other week... my bike is still in getting fixed

From the sounds of it (from people here far wiser than me) you can wear the clutch plates down and its a quick and relatively cheap fix. Or you can do what I did and wear through them.

You weren't doing anything silly on the bike like rolling burnouts or anything like that? Should be fine if you haven't.

Not getting much change from £400 - however if it was just the clutch plates worn down I would have been charge closer to the £100 mark from the garage that is fitting it.

i heard an expensive noise then i couldnt change out of 3rd
so i traded it in for an oh so reliable cbr400 (deathrace)

just had to order new plates for by CB400,s clutch (£39) since its started to slip badly. the clutch is piss easy to work on just looks complacated.

nothing really doa clutch, although the rs doesnt sound like clutch to me...cant see why it would just give up.

I've done 2 courses at Merton College and it included clutch changes, but I just don't have the time to do it

Hi

The Rotax 122 engined RS125 is one of the easiest bikes around to change the clutch plates on. Quarter of the time is taking the fairing panel off, and half the time is spent looking at the clutch in your hand thinking "what have I missed, it cannot be this easy".
