Hi guys, my 2000W Fx has developed the more than annoying cam cahin tensioner problem. It has been a bit rattly for a few months but has finally started its descent into a forced repair. Trouble is, all the fair weather bikers are back out now so the garage is busy doing services on bikes that did 150 miles last year Laughing so Ive got to wait until the 22nd of june Sad Been told to take it easy aswell. Anybody else had the same problem? Anyone fitted a new one themselves?

Wink

I read a site last night detailing how to fit it, it looks like a piece of piss and really felt like having a go. I told the bloke at the garage this and he said its important to get your timing marks lined up firt or the chain can jump two clicks and you could end up with bent valves. The bleedin site didnt mention any of that!

Getting the valve timing wrong is the most sure-fire way to kill your engine other than perhaps running it without any oil in it. Even a single tooth out can spell disaster.

From what I can gather they have been changing the design of the part to try and stop it re-curring. Pain in the arse if its going to keep going. Im hoping my bike has the original and Its about to get the new improved part and wont go wrong again?

Hi

Doddle to fit. In theory the cam timing could jump when you take the tensioner out, but this is fairly unlikely.

All the best

So you mean that as long as it remains in the same position when you take out the old one, and the new one goes back in without any cam chain movement then theres no problem?

Hi

Pretty much. Depending on the exact position the engine stops in the cams could be pulling the cam chain one way or the other.

If you are worried take the rocker cover off and keep an eye on it while you do the work. Once the new tensioner is in place then check the cam timing, and turn the engine over carefully by hand.

All the best

Keith

Man of my own heart (oops. And to think (on my model) it looks like two bolts, slip in slip out.

Never mind.

Mine is rattling merrily at tickover before its run, then after a bit it goes happily. Annoying as hell. You get really vexed, take it to the garage and its shut up by then. Its odd how it fades in and out though.... And when i rev it it stops, then comes back with a vengeance.

Hi

The CCT is just a spring with a ratchet so that it can only go one way. Push tensioner fully in, put CCT body into engine and bolt up, put spring in place and then put the bolt in the end of it.

All the best

Every single one mate! Except for the 600RR as far as I've heard.

Apparently it's an easy job to sort.

I had mine off when I did my 16k service. Its easy, and a haynes manual will tell you where to put the timing marks etc to before removing it.

It is a bit fiddly getting in to do them and there is no need for the special tool to release the tension, a small screwdriver does this just fine.

Do it yourself.

Im ok, backs a bit sore but the bike is a state! I was really impressed at how well it held up though, i was expecting bits everywhere but all I got were scratches and cracks!

As far as diagnosing the CCT problem, it normally rears its ugly head at about 3000 rpm and sounds like a bad rattle.
