Does everyone use the AA then for their bike breakdown service? How much do you pay?

makes sense really as you can tow a car if it breaks (my cars break down every week) but cant really tow a bike without a trailer. Plus my bike's 25 years old Evil or Very Mad

I use the recovery service from Carole Nash Insurance which will take you and your bike home from anywhere in Europe after a breakdown (not just the three mile tow that basic AA membership gets you).

I pay the grand total of nothing for this service ands use it maybe two or three times a year.

Don't be fooled by the "We repair x% of vehicles at the side of the road" claims, most AA mechainics have not the first clue about motorcycle mechanics so unless you have run out of fuel or have a flat battery, you are getting towed.

Hi

We just went to renew with Direct Line but then found out that they will not cover any vehicle 16 or more years old. So that counted out a few of the bikes (and a few more in a year or so) and one of the cars within the next year (and a couple more shortly afterwards).

Time to start ringing round for personal cover for both cars and bikes.

All the best

Keith

I know it might sound as if I am a shareholder or something (I'm not by the way) but CN originaly specialised in classic bike insurance. This is largely why they started doing the free recovery because they are aware that older machines break down more regularly. No silly 'under 16 years old' rules. I have seen them recover a mates BSA M20 before.

Maybe worth a call?

Covered by Norwich Union. They don't cover bikes as such, only as a second vehicle if you have personal cover.

Went out to the car park, nearest car was a red vw polo. Took its registration down. Et Voila!

When I had to use it I was sent an RAC patrol who actually knew something about bikes (surprised). Tried tightening the clutch cable things like that. Appeared to have a basic knowledge of bikes.

Hi

Don't want to use the AA as they will charge to recover following an accident.

Was with the RAC. Do not want to go back to them after having a 4 hour wait when they "forgot" I called them. This was meant to be their priority sevice!

Direct Line won't touch vehicles over 15 years old.

Most of the others seem to have no wish to cover bikes, or want one policy per vehicle (which could be a touch expensive).

All the best

Keith

I'm with NCI Biker Rescue, and I paid like £40 for Vehicle based cover. Personal based is about £60 I think.

Have a look at there site, www.ncionline.co.uk .

I was looking at Carole Nash myself, but, I read in Classic Bike magazine (the ad in classic bike magazine, that is) that they are operating an over 25 years old only policy. At least thats what I can remember anyway, It's a shame, CN sound quite a reasonable insurer.

Any truth in that, I did have a brief look at the Carole Nash internet site, couldn't find anything about it

Think you'll find it was just that they class a "Classic Bike" as being over 15yrs old, suppose they might have a further over 25yrs old one as well but I haven't heard that one.
But that's just for their classic policies, they do insure modern bikes as well

I think that is just for the specific "classic bike" policies. They also quote for the full range of normal bike policies too. I have an MZ baghira and a GPZ500s insured with them at the moment and I have been using them (and their free recovery service) on and off since I was 18.
