Hazard Perception advice req`d

Seeing as I've just had an offer to have my full bike test paid for. Very Happy

Now, I've left it too soon initially to take my test due to me needing a theory test and my CBT runs out in just over a month. So I'll redo that and then take the theory test and full licence after.

I've got the CD-rom with the test questions on it, so I don't see a problem with those. It's this hazard perception malarky that I'm unsure about.

I've got the video, but what's considered best practice when actually taking the test? I know that quite a few people on here have taken it, so wondered if there was any good advice?

i doubt youll get a theory and actual test in that time scale, youll have to try and get cancelations. if youve been rideing for 2 years you should pass the hazard perception ok and if you really should know so you can get some lessons.

Yep, I definitely won't get my theory test done before my CBT runs out, so I'll do another.

I've got to get my test, I think six years on L's is a shade too long......! Laughing

You have to register and pay a small fee (£4.95 for 2 weeks access)
I found it well worth the money as they have all the questions you will get in the theory test (you get 35 from a possible 1000).
Also they have hazard perception clips which you can do.
I think it is an excellent site and a must for anyone doing their test.

took me 4 goes to pass my HP but i have been rideing 4 less than a year when i did pass it i couldnt see where id been fooking up the other times just do the disk and go 4 the test when you can get it Smile

I've done the hazard perception test twice (once for car in 2004 and once for bike, last week) and passed it twice.

What I did was click up to around 9 to 10 (occasionally 11) times per clip - every time I saw anything that might be a hazard I clicked once, and then again a second or two later in case the first one was too quick.

I think you can click up to around 12-18 times in a clip before you score 0 points for that clip, but I didn't want to test this in the real test! 9 is definitely OK though. I think you can click unlimited times while the hazard is in sight which I also didn't test in the actual exam - you can tell when the "scoring" hazard has happened because the car is forced to slow down or change direction (but you're then too late to score points!) If you get towards the end of the clip and you're worried you've clicked too much, stop clicking if the hazard has gone, but if it hasn't or you think it's the double hazard clip (there's only one of them) then just click once for each possible hazard and don't do speculative clicks.

From what I've heard, the most common way people fail is being too cautious - just click once or twice on everything that might be a hazard, but don't go very much over 9 clicks per clip and you'll be fine. It is a bit tense doing it as you get no feedback until the end.

As for the written part, you've already got the CD so just make sure you know every question. You could also buy the book with the answers in - £4.99 from Waterstones for the BSM or AA versions - don't get the official DSA version which is £12.95 (it's exactly the same except for slightly longer explanations) and learn the questions, and you'll get 35/35. It take about three hours to read all the questions so do it over a couple of days, unless you want to do it from 12am to 3am the night of the test like I did Smile

Definitely don't try learning from the Highway Code as they do have some strange questions (like what colour are the cats eyes on the middle lanes of a motorway and ones about tram signs) which I don't think you'd pick up by reading the Highway Code, even though all the answers are in there.

Theory test and HP, if you dont pass 1st time you must have serious brain problems.

For the HP.

You CLICK ONCE when you see what could be a hazard, you then CLICK ONCE MORE, if that maybe hazard has changed into a hazard.

It's that simple.

i booked my theory on the 6th, passed it on the 20th, booked my practical on the 20th and passed it on the 27th - so 3 weeks Cool

As for the hazard perception test i practiced with the CD and would have failed without it. get it!

I just clicked once when i initially see a cyclist, pedestrian, car at junction, blind bend, low sun, etc etc, then i clicked again just before i had to "take action to avoid" the hazard then once again for good measure unless i was a little late reacting the first time.

I passed my theory test a few months ago and was very worried about the HPT. All i did was imagine that i was actually driving along those roads and anytime i felt like there was something there that would have made me change my speed or direction, i clicked. Just imagine it's real. I actually found the real theory test a hell of a lot easier than the cd rom i had been using at home. I was in and oout of the whole test in no time at all.
