So after reading Mr Lucky's extensive maintenace guide I figured i should maybe look at my bike for the first time but I don't have any tools.

What should I get first if I am on a tight budget? I fancied a nice big sledgehammer but doubt it will be so useful.

No tool related puns/jokes please Rolling Eyes Razz

Usually a socket set and a few spanners would come in handy.
just a few basic tools really.

cheap set of allen keys from poundland-type shops, you could also get a cheap set of metric spanners and a couple of different types of screwdrivers. that's about £6 so far.
get a couple of adjustable spanners, they're good for the big wheel nuts and smaller ones handy if you don't want to carry a complete set around.
with what you've got now you can do a hell of a lot with.
but for just tensioning the chain get an big adjustable, and a 10mm (or is it 12) spanner.

oh yeah, pliers, side cutters and long-nose pliers are always good!

look at Maplin for cheap toold. i got lots of stuff from there.

And...
GAFFA TAPE!!!

I think about £25 but you should be able to find one cheaper than that.

Definately the first thing you need is a set of allen keys. The Planet is completely held together with bloody allen key bolts. I'm pretty sure you want metric ones as well.

The quality of any tools you get is reflacted in the price. buy the best you can afford. good tools will last forever Smile

Best bet in the short term, go to Homebase or B and Q and they normally have at least one "tool kit" which is shit loads of tool, not great quality, but for about £20-30 and has most things you need. Look in it for allen keys, spanners, screw drivers, pliers etc

That should do you for most things Very Happy

Homebase & B&Q tend to be quite expensive.
I got an alright, not good quality but fairly comprehensive spanner set from Argos, they've got some other quite reasonably priced stuff as well.

I'm after a decent quality wall-drive spanner set, but they're hard enough to find, never mind not at a ridiculous price Sad

Hi

Well, cheap tools can be a pain. If they fail they will probably land up with you mashing your hand into something sharp (there is always something sharp around at times like that). That said the Halfords stuff isnt bad and the Halford Professional stuff is very good. If you go round to a bike show then some of the stuff such as Bergen is acceptable. Other problem with cheap tools is that if they slip they tend to damage the head of the bolt you are trying to remove making it even more difficult

Cheap tools are OK to use occasionally, such as to leave in a toolkit in the car, but longer term try and pick up reasonable quality or better tools (Snap On may be good, but there are others just as good, and that quality is not really worthwhile for home use)

As to what to buy, Allen Keys (or allen key bits, that go in a socket), 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 17mm spanners, 3/8" drive socket set and a suitable spanner for the rear wheel spindle. Also a pair of pliers and a cross head and flat head screw driver

After that, buy stuff as it is needed

All the best

Keith

What maintenance do you carry out on a regular basis on your bike?

Tailor your tool purchase to that requirement...

My own best buy was a 50 piece socket set from Halfords. I bought it 12 years ago.

It isn't just important buying the product but also how you look after it. You can't make use of your purchase if you have lost half of the kit.

That 50 piece socket set I bought 12 years ago? I still have all 50 pieces in the original box and believe me, it is a seriously used bit of gear.

It was originally bought to assist in the maintenance of my BM 320.

Best £20 I ever spent...

Stephen, weren't you one of the people that got slated for spamming Laughing

Mr Lucky's posts are all relevant so I don't see why 2 next to each other are a problem, I mean, it's not as if he does it a lot anyway.

I can use 'proper grammar' as you put it and I give a shit, so you are wrong on both counts.

I posted twice in approximately five minutes and felt that the second of the two posts was not an addendum but a post in itself. Can you advise me of the time frame required before posting a second post and can you also tell me why me posting two posts in succession even warranted comment by you?
