Ducati 600ss

after painfully searching through ehem car insurance and finding that i cant get a car for less than £2000 on insurance i decided to stick with bikes, after decideing i may go for 400 many of you tipped me off with the 600s, i thought i could only get a trad, anyways i thought just for a laugh i'd try the duke, and CIA came back with £1012 TPFT! thats cheaper than the ZX6r, CBR(which were ridiculous!) and many others, not cheaper than the trads however but who can compare a duke to yamaha?
anyways to the point...are the 600ss's any good? are they renound for falling apart or anything like that?

600 twins are um......limited i thinks the word i need, fairly good acceleration but not a lot of top end

600 in line 4's are better

Hi

Nice enough bike, but dont expect it to be fast. Top speed is about 110~120mph I think.

It should last fine, and they are quite cheap to buy but at the end of the day they are no quicker than a CB500 (look alot better though.......)

but you can't deny its a duke, im only 17, its a duke i love the zx6r styling too, but do i need that extra top end speed?? i mean we can only go 70mph(unless theres a trip to germany)

Yeah. Cheaper to insure than a sports 400, and about the same as a 500 commuter like the GS500. People say they are unreliable, but if you keep to the service schedule and look after it properly it will live as long as a VFR.

Oh, and it has loads more torque than a 400

slow?? theyre slow?, i need to keep up my boy"biker"racer image. seriously tho im not interested in the power, more the looks and sound. i can see it now, turning up to college and all the girls coming round me with there umbrellas mmmmmmmmmmmm but, i am with stephen a little on the zx6r situation as i like the bike, only problem is its £1.50 dearer on insurance than the duke!

serious knee damage, balls the size of my fists, fractured leg. **neck damage, shoulder, arm and slight bruising to both my hands. plus being off work for three weeks so far, and possibly a couple more as i cant drive. also missed loads of college

fuck the 600 with a cclaim like that you can get a turbo nitrous r1 if you like i broke my ankle and got 3.5k so for what happend toyou plus the price of the bike you should get about 40-50k

i know your going to get a shit load of money and it will be very tempting to go and buy a fantastic bike go on holidays and buy loads of crap but i will give you one very good bit of advice if you get as much as i think you will get buy a house its something you will need and its a fantastic start in life haveing something like that im 24 and i cant afford to buy and by the time i do get somewere i will be about 50 before its mine

the very person who posted above me should be able to tell you all about Desmo belts, their cost and their replacement schedule.

Buying any Ducati is a decision taken after much thought and soul searching.

Did you even realise about the valve/cambelt service intervals and costs? Are you buying a bike with full Ducati Service History. If not could you service it yourself and be happy with your own maintenance?

Do you know which 600SS you are getting? Have you checked the spec (yes it varied).

Has the bike been down? Did you know, depending on what is available Ducati use a white or pink base primer on their paintwork, making paint repairs an expensive job (usually this only applies to red Dukes).

Is the Ducati 600SS something which will suite your riding style? Short legged and long arm.

Do you like having your fillings removed by solid suspension?

After all of that, ther e is few better feelings than railing on a 600SS (or any of the SS range actually) with that noise in your helmet. You thought it was twin Termig's but really it was you screaming with delight.

Those days are few and far between my friend, but when they come around it is good to own a Ducati.

Join a recovery service or maintain to the highest standard, the choice is yours. In fact, join a recovery service anyway.

My brother rides a 600ss. he got it after doing DAS. nice bike, pulls really well and sounds fantastic (i'll record a sound of it for you soon if you like). They are really cheap to insure, at 17 i was getting quotes for about £600 TFPT. I was really up for getting one but i spoke to a few different dealers and they all said it would run like a crap if restricted 33bhp.

He's had it for about 9 months and nothing's gone wrong riding in all weather. His service was £300 though

well, i never realised that i could get cbr's or gsxr's, and since the gsxr is the goal, i think ill go for that. but ive gotta stop dreaming cos its gonna be ages before i get a bike

Hi

From memeory the valves need adjusting at each service, and the belts every other year. Dont think the valves are meant to be that difficult to do if you have the spare shims. Belts should be easy to do

Being honest they probably make a very good first bike (maybe a monster is better), but they are not that quick which will put many people off who would otherwise be perfectly suited to them.

Sorry, but I tend to take the view that the best bike for someone who has just passed their test is something fairly heavy and without vast amounts of power. You may well get bored of it in 6 months, but at least the bill wont be frightening when you drop it in a car park
