Question
Hi all

I am going to look at ZZR600 1997 at the weekend, it has 30000 miles on the clock. It is up for £2200, have any of you got any ideas what the bike is like good or bad.

My dad has one, commuted to london on it 5 years every day. Bought it new and only had one problem. The downpipes rot very quickly so i would advise anti corrosion cream for them. Price seems a little high but if it has FSH and looks good condition then go for it. Pretty quick bikes to and comfy. Laughing

The gear box, make sure it dosen't jump in or out of any gears, if it does leave it the hell alone... its 1/2/3rd that have problems, theres allot of engines in great conditions, but many many shite gearboxes mangled..

Appart from that they are great bikes, a mate had one and loved it and did anything and everything on it, its a sports tourer, the suspension has been accused of being squashy but if your expecting full on sports your looking in the wrong place..

£2200 sounds a little pricey to me but i may be wrong, i'd want to to be in sheeit hot condition for that... check e-bay and auto trader for similar aged +millaged zzrs...

Take a test ride, check the gears very very carefully at a veriery of revs

Good luck Thumbs Up

I was thinking of a new bike, instead of the SV, I was looking at one of these. But a new one. Does £4995 sound a good deal for a new one. Sorry to hijack the topic! Very Happy

Are they comfortable, quick (or quicker than the SV650), cheap to run and fun???
I'm not asking much!!

Nice one gents, I will be using this as a commuter daily. It comes with 3 months warranty from the dealer, hopefully I can get them down to 2 grand. I will obviously test drive it to check out the gears and all that you have said Surprised

TBH personaly i'd go for an sv over one, but depends what you want...

The zzr is a sports tourer, it will do a trackday but not nearly as well as a zxr would for example.. but it will be a hell of allot more comfy Razz

You could take it fully loaded with a passenger arround europe and it would cope very well, it wont be goldwing comfy but it will be better than a naked bike or a focused sports...

Its more powerfull than the sv, but its a 4, so its going to be, twins imo are more fun to ride, just the feel of the engine is different and the sound e.t.c.

Its an allrounder, which is important if your useing it allot, sv will do these things too but differently, never ridden an sv but i'd like to..

Bandit is worth looking at too... gpz even maybe... tdm850 e.t.c.

Well I've had the SV from new since late January and loved it. Even done 1100 miles round Ireland. It just aggravates a back problem I have and the seat makes my arse ache after an hour! Shocked

Looking for something light, comfy, cheap to insure, easy to ride (fast?!?!?!) and about £5k new?

Any suggestions??

£5k for a new bike is pushing it a bit.

The rideing position on the zzr is fairly sporty, i.e. leaning forward, you might find it unrideable, it might be fine, hard to say... the seat was quite good i think, didn't have a very long go on it so hard to say...

Maybe something where you sit more upright might be better, like the tdm, or triumph tiger (in black oh yes) still a match for the sv, nice and upright, comfy enough (for real distance an after market seat might be in order..

Ignoreing the insureance... the zzr1100 is the one to have if you go that route Razz Very Happy

russ - check for rusty bits arround the rear shock too, if its crusty then its probably not been very well looked after because they suffer if not kept very clean... if in doubt dont rush into buying, theres lots of them about Wink

I'd steer clear of the ZZR to be honest, its poorly built and will corrode to buggery.

Though I have to admit I do like the styling on them.

Parkers don't seem to rate them either.

Parkers wrote:
First 600 to have ram-air induction and an alloy frame (in 1990), the once firebreathing ZZ-R has mellowed into a sports tourer. Still quick, but the handling isn't up to modern standards. Comfy and practical, but thirsty if you thrash it.
MARKET
Most for sale are older examples because not many new ones were sold in the last few years.
RELIABILITY
Build quality has always been abysmal and the carbs ice-up in winter. Exhausts rot, discs warp and rear suspension is shot by 15,000 miles. Hard luggage can make it weave at high speeds.
TECHNICAL DATA
599cc, in-line four, 97bhp, 195kg, 160mph, 35mpg, IG13

There are much better bikes out there, and for £2000 you could get a mid 90's CBR600, Yamaha Thundercat or even a late Suzuki GSX600F.
All much better bikes than the ZZR.

In ways you are right, but when launched the ZZR was a fine bike, and knocked spots off the GSX600F. Build quality should be better, top speed is substantially better (10mph higher) and handling is better. Where the Teapot won was cost (and it was a hell of a lot cheaper back then) and the ease of lobbing in GSXR750 engines.

The only thing they really used to get slated for was the really annoying low fuel warning lights and slop appearing in the cush drive rather quickly (claimed to be cured on the later models).

Think the ZZR managed to win various national 600 supersport classes, so yes they can be made to handle adequatly. Carb icing should only be a problem on imports which will not have the carb heaters (or maybe the odd bike that managed to miss the recall).

For £2000 you should be able to get a late one in good condition. The Late 90s CBR is a better bike in a lot of ways, but more expensive to buy. The early 1990s CBR (and the late 80s one) was hardly a shinning example of build quality (not saying they are bad, just little different to the ZZR, and not a patch on a VFR750 of the same age).

Only real issues seem to be that the fairings seem to break easily, nobody bothers to lube the suspension (which is especially bad as Kawasaki barely bothered either), corrosion of minor items (and the odd non minor item such as the down pipes) and the low seat height might be a problem for some people (but is a big bonus for others).

All the best

Keith

Want to spend upto £6k on a new bike. Not neccessarily the ZZR600 but something that fits the bill like I said.

Thinking a new Fazer 1000, but the insurance company might shite itself when I ask for a quote! Shocked

Hi

At that kind of money (only people advertising a ZZR600 new in MCN are D&K at £5200, but I think I remember George White selling them new for about £4500 a year or 2 ago) there are better bikes. Being such an old bike they do seem to loose value rapidly. A CBR600F maybe suitable. Fazer 1000 might be OK being group 15, against the ZZR being group 13.

All the best

Keith

GlasgowSV650s, if you like everything about your bike apart from the seating position/comfort then look at the V-strom. They do a 650 and 1000cc version. The 650 is pretty much identical to your SV but different chassis/seating arrangement and looks. The 1000cc version is the same but obviously with a litre v-twin. The looks arent to everyone's tastes but I like them.

Also consider the TDM900, nice and comfy!

Everyone seems to go for an inline-4 sports style bike when upto 80mph these bikes are nearly as quick but alot more useable with a better position for viewing traffic etc.

Consider the Thundercat (no longer sold new, maybe some old pre-registered stock about) and the Fazer, both from Yamaha. And the VFR 800 if you go second hand (pre VTEC).

Ride some different style bikes to see what suits you best, if it's alot of city riding there are better bikes than a ZZR-600 Thumbs Up

What's a Thundercat? Is that a YZF 600? I seen one in my local Yamaha dealer and didn't know what is was, but it looked kinda cheap. But that's a sports bike, that not equal discomfort?

Fazer 1000, if the insurance gives me the Thumbs Up they are within my budget. And huge straight up bars and low pegs.

I go long runs, like 7/8 hour runs. I've racked up more than 4000 miles since the end of January.

Here's my ZZR that I recently picked up for the bargain basment price of £250. New tyre and pads £150 and it's cost me £400. As mentioned previously it jumps out of 2nd gear if you give it too many beans but I figured for £400 I shall ride it to death and avoid 2nd gear. If you've got £2500 to spend i'd definately go for a thundercat 100000000000 x better IMO.

A mate (Lufbra_Paul) has got a Thundercat for sale for £2.2k, but it's in Loughborough. He does say he's happy to deliver it for the train ticket home though.

LOL I was in the middle of changing the pads when that picture was taken! They are now back where they should be. I got this as a part exchange with cash for my Thunderace. It's a 91 bike. I paid £1750 for the Thunderace and sold it for £1500 & got the ZZR aswell. Not bad I didn't think.
