How many 20mph limits do you see about these days where it is an unecessarily low limit for the road conditions?

Many of them are illegally applied, I have been reading up on this, it is covered in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions act 2002 PART II Section 16

Point of interest:
Quote:

The sign shown in diagram 674 may only be placed on a road if no point on any road (not being a cul-de-sac less than 80 metres long), to which the speed limit indicated by the sign applies, is situated more than 50 metres from a traffic calming feature.

So you can't have a legally applied 20mph limit UNLESS there is a traffic calming feature within 50 metres of ALL parts of that limit. I know the ones in Ambleside in Cumbria don't comply with this as there is no street furniture anywhere in sight. I wonder if anyone has been prosecuted for breaking this limit?

That is an interesting point. We have one in Brading on the Island. in which there are no traffic calming measures. Might be worth getting pulled and then producing that rule Razz

i know of one outside a school where ther are no calming measures and no crossings(all thats opposite is fields and hills)
but as it's a school area i'll happily obey it.but out of school hours i think you'd get away doing 30 unless you were real unlucky.

haha this makes me laugh every time i hear about these 20 mph zones....

ok .

My mate was doing his car test ...

he arrived at a road with a 20mph sign on, so he drives along at 20...

finishes test and FAILS for doing 20 in a 30, apparently the 20 sign was meant to be covered up with a "BAG"... how the hell was he meant to know???

Tower Bridge as a 20mph limit. No other measures there, and they have SPECS cameras at either end.

The street that my cul-de-sac is situated on is a 20 zone, if you enter it from one end that is.....
Its a new estate and they have just finished building it. In all the confusion, they have forgotten to place a 20 zone sign at one end.
Needless to say, I won't be pointing it out until I get stopped for doing 30 down it (coming from the non-signed end, of course).... Laughing

No traffic calming measures in our 20mph zone, but it does have one mini roundabout, a school crossing and a primary school right 'through' it.

It was only put up when a child was killed. Illegal or not? Confused

Of course, doing over 20mph past kids coming out of school is just stupid. Thumbs Down

Greg, I think 30 is fine outside of a school, 20 just infuriates me. Laughing

Hi

There are some different rules around, but many 20mph limits are illegal (such as the whole of the centre of Wolverhampton). Rules vary as to whether it is a 20mph limited road or an area ("zone").

All the best

My whole estate is covered by a 20mph limit. No speed humps or traffic calming in sight.

If the state secretary of transport gives his permission, these rules can be bent in some situations, such as outside schools and other 'dangerous' areas. For example, I found that the one in Brading has been oked by the big man personally Mad

Hrm. That'd be why the university have built speedbumps every 50 metres then, to allow them to pretend that their 15mph speed limit is legal. My speedo barely reads anything at 15mph, and I enjoy hitting speedbumps at 30-40, even if my bike doesn't.

Private road probably, so real real legal relevance at all. Fairly certain that in the UK speed limits must be round numbers.

All the best

The one that always makes me think WTF is just of the A3 between New Malden and Raines Park the 40m long bridge over the A3 is now a 20mph limit.

I mean why it is clear of obstruction straight why not level it at 30mph

The most insane thing about it is it would be too short to get a speed reading with a had held device and to short to place a speed camera so it totally unenforceable even if it wasn’t for the crap signage.

The other one that make no sense is traps lane in New Malden by the school there is a 20mph zone (in it self not a bad idea but should be day time only) but it has beer mat size speed limit signs and the 20 painted on the road in two places. There is just no way the limit is legal.
