I can't fucking believe it

I was riding home from work this evening everything going fine when I passed a guy stranded on the Birmingham City ring road looking rather bemused by his not moving zxr750. I decided to do the decent thing & went all the way to the next island, back on myself to the island before and then back on myself again to check he was alright.

The bike had just stopped, he didn't know why and it wasn't turning over at all. I helped him get his bike off the road, helped him try to bump start it but it wasn't having any of it. So he said "don't worry, i'll get it picked up, thanks for your help". Feeling like i'd done my bit I turned and walked back to my bike and guess what..........it wouldn't fucking start. Just a ticky, ticky, ticky noise, which I presume is a nakered starter motor.

I had to get the guy back and help me off the road. Fortunately it started no problem with a bump and got me home. It's been on the road 4 days and it's died on me whilst doing a good deed!!!!!!!! Where was the good karma?? Is it a nakered starter motor or is there some miracle simple cure that will get it going again???

could just be that the battery is a bit low.

I had hell with my old bike because the battery was low and didnt have enough poer to run the starter motor.

No idea about the mechanics though. Have you tried starting it again since you got home?

I'm going out there in a minute to try it. I really hope it starts but deep down, I already know the outcome. I don't think it'll be the battery but I suppose it's worth a check.

Sounds like a low battery; Ticking noise is usually the solenoid clicking but the motor not whirring, no?

Certainly sounds exactly like my bike when the battery is out anyway.

I think it is infectious.

I broke down in my mini not long ago, called my dad who came up to give me a hand fixing/pushing it, his car then went totaly dead and we both had to walk home. Later on I went out in a mates car and that broke down

Dead battery, the ticking noise is the relay clicking, enough power to do that, but not turn the starter motor over. You might want to find out why your battery died though, could be a knackered battery or a problem in the charging circuit, you ought to test it all.

Right, just been to try it and it had a very lame attempt at turning over but didn't quite make it so I believe it is the battery. The shit is I havn't got a charger so it's the bus tommorow. What did I do to deserve this.

I'm in Moseley. I may be being presumtious here but if you guys would consider dropping by and lending me a charger then my faith in human kindness is fully renewed. I'm actually going out shortly though so tonight wouldn't be possible. If I can't sort it by tommorow though there'd be a beer in it for you.

can you check the voltage???

try bump starting it... then checking it whilst it's on (should be 14.4 or near). go for a ride (atleast 10-20 miles) should give it some juice then.

if it is the charging circuit the voltage should vary when the bike is being revved (hook up V meter... blip throttle, to check)


if no charge.... bump start bike... run car.. attach jump leads... leave for 15 mins

i went through 3 batteries when i had probs with starting cos i thought it was the batteries but in the end it was the regulator that was buggered and kept boiling the battery.

Worthwhile to check out that i think.

Check the voltage across the battery when enginge is on and when u rev it it shold stay constant at 13ish V
