RS125 but why???

My friend owns a RS125 '00 model and........ he has had to get the engine re coned 4 times in 3 years!!! costing him shit loads.

We went for a bike ride today and his engine went bang AGAIN. the bike has had a min of 4 engine rebulids and the engine has only done 21,000 miles. what the hell.

He seems to think most RS's need a lot of engine rebuilds. My NSR bas only had one in 18,000 miles and that was due to low engine oil.

Im starting to think RS's are only good for the odd weekend ride out

Someone isnt/hasnt looked after that bike very well...it obviously isnt set up right if it keeps seizing. Look into the jetting, its probably running too lean, or cheap oil is being used!

prob with the rs it is such a high tunned 125 2 stroke, u need to properly warm it up all the time and use the best 2 stroke oils, imo the rs125 suxs italian pile of shite with a crap Austrian engine

Own an RS125 at the moment (same one as ash t I think (well not exactly the same one obviously )).

Its ok I guess but the problem is with them is that they're not exactly fast (150mph tops ) and therefore I think people thrash them a bit. Only real problem I've had with mine so far is that it can be a bit tempermental starting but that could be down to being kept in a cold garage. The engine on it does feel ok at speed (e.g above 60ish) but I do kinda get the impression its a bit fragile. Also it has to be revved a lot when moving off.

Like I say, not a bad bike but in the near future I'll probably look at getting a larger cc bike for longer trips.

Im well happy i did'nt get a RS now lucky i got my NSR. I needed to get a bike which would get me to work everyday.

Mine took thrashings, long hauls and commuting without any problems whatsoever. I put about three thousand miles on it in six months and never once thought 'better take it easy or it will pop'. Great little bike, but as always buy one that hasn't been looked after, set up right, warmed up or run in and its going to cause you trouble. Bit unfair to write it off as 'a pile of italian shit' tbh.

i bought mine after it hadnt been run right and had been neglected like crazy 6 years old and the oil looked like it handt been changed once
all is ok had it since feb use it everyday

i have an RS125, 2001 bike and its had 2 rebiulds from new 1 of which was the 10 000 KM rebiuld that aprilia recommend.

since i have had it (which ok i've only had it 5 months now ) its been fine and i believe that it is all down to the way you treat it. OK it does have a problem with being too over snesitive abt oil and crap but other than that i think its a great bike!

Anyway, i will be travelling to Leeds on it from Liverpool and if it doesnt break then then i dont think it ever will!!

My old RS (2000 model) which I bought from a dealership went well from the day it was bought to the day I sold it, 8 months later. It had been rebuilt before I bought it by the dealership and I ran it exactly how you are meant to. It was used for both commuting and fun and never gave me any problems. It was full power before anyone says anything. I've grown up with 2 strokes and know them quite well, hence why it didnt give me any grief. Ironically, it seized about a month after I sold it on to the new owner.

Fantastic bikes in my opinion, damn good fun if you're able to take care of one. They're so much fun, I'm arranging to buy another very very soon. I found my old one more fun to ride than the Bandit600.

As others have said really, they aren't un reliable it depends on how they have been cared for. Theres even someone on the aprilia forum who has done 25,000 km on original piston and rings and is still showing good compression.

Had my RS125 for almost 12 years (and about 17000km, so not much). I change the rings at 6000km and changed the piston at 12000km. Just about due another set of rings now.

The bike has been warmed up properly but has been thrashed once warmed up (115mph indicated was 750rpm into the red in top gear).

Problems I have had:-
Blocked fuel filter before the first service.
Blown shock
Corroded wire to the regulator / rectifier unit resulting in it not charging.
Snapped clutch cable (well, almost, nursed it home).
Ignition fault resulting in poor power at high (9500rpm+) revs.

Nothing really. Do the work to it and take care and they are fine. Sure the NSR does seem to be mechanically more reliable (electrically is another question), but the NSR is designed to produce rather less power (although modern RSs have lost most of their power advantage). Result is large ports in the barrel, good for power but bad for reliability.

Maybe theres slight play in the conrod thats why it keeps going bang.

Ive had my RS 125 for 8 months, ive used cheap £2 a litre oil from the local garage, i know i shouldnt i dont no more, & i ragged it most of the time. it was then pinched for 11 days in which it would have been hammered to death.

After i got it back it started straigh away and there were still no problems until about a month later when a piston ring snapped
