Makeshift luggage? (top boxes?)

Looking for ideas really.. got panniers which is gonna be nice, tank bag, but no top box.. got a krauser rack and seen boxes going on e-bay but they are a bit pricey for how old most of them are (and to fit i think only the older ones will) and allot seem to be the whole set..

So what sort of thing could be bodged into a fairly good topbox?

Something i could put a lock on would be good, planning on putting gear on the top as well probably being my kit bag with light stuff in.. would there be any good way of makeing a the box fit on the base (ideally so it can be removed fairly quickly or locked on) or would makeing a new base be a better plan?

Anyone know any good luggage bodges while this is thread is up?

Recently my mums told me she made her 'luggage system' out of wood; well the frame work to hold the panniers. Seemed to work apparantly.

I seem to remember a long time ago my parents had a pannier made out of an old kitchen sink; though probably just for all the obvious jokes .

I've often found old computer case is useful for constructing all sort of bike brackets.

You could put a wanted thing in the other section for old top boxes?

I've got a couple of side boxes I have no need for and it would probably be much esier to botch one of those on rather than try to botch something in to a top box.

Good idea about the computer case - the metal used in them is pretty strong.

i made a centerstand guard out of a pc case... touratech £35, old knackered pc case = free

There is a wanted section in loot.. guess i could try in there...

Kitchen sink.. ooh dear, i'm cringeing just imagaineing

Keep the ideas comeing though, seen a few that would be great but all way over the top expensive (moartar case was one, pelican cases lok great but propper pricey)

You shouldn't need solder. Aluminium is a pain to do anyway, I would use epoxy if anything.

Make a simple box as shown below. Make the lid in the same way, but make the size of the middle rectangle the same as the OUTSIDE diameter of the main box so it will slot over the top. You only need three sides to the lid. Join the two halves with a piano hinge, again pop rivetted.

Make it out of cardboard first, remember to leave enough leeway in the folds to allow for the thickness of the aluminium.

EDIT: It struck me that a more robust way of doing the lid would be to make it with four sides so it fits 'loose' on top, like the lid on a biscuit tin, hold it on with a couple of those catches like you get on the boxes bands pack their PA system in. Lining the inside of the lid with rubber would make the seal watertight and non-rattly.

tend to be dozens of shapes and sizes and colours and materials on them things, pretty cheap too usually.

or you can get box side paniers, solid ones instead of fabric and lay a camping rucksack across the top of them like I do:

You can use jerry-cans for side panniers. Chop the top off with an angle grinder then reattach with a hinge.
