Right this may sound like a boring topic to some, so if the topic of tyres bores you don't read on. Wink

Right down to business, since owning bike with skinny tyres the last few years I am totally new to this wider tyres lark.
My current bike has wide (to me) tyres, it has a radial on the rear which I like and its a Metzeler MEZ 2 Touring tyre with a hell of alot of life left, infact its nearly brand new.
But my front tyres is a Metzeler ME33 Lazer Cross ply, with a little life in it. So I am looking at replacing this soon.
Its a 120/70-17 and I am totally clueless what to buy!
Should I buy an MEZ 1 or MEZ 3 to match the rear, or go for a stickier tyre.

Please help as I am totally well and truely clueless at this point!

I'd match the rear. the Mez's are fine for your machine, dont waste your money on super sporty rubber.

Cross ply! Shocked

Cross ply is an old tyre, I'm not even sure if you can buy them any more.

If you feel there is enough life left in the rear then buy a matching front, ask a decent tyre place for compatibility, the tyre size is fairly standard so you shouldn't have any problems. If you don't feel the rear is worth it then get a new set, tyres can go off/crack, square, etc with age, they don't have to be down to their wear markers to need replacing and by the sounds of it they might have been there for some time.

You will notice a massive difference in handling/breaking if your tyres are shagged and you fit something nice and new, it's almost like a bit of a treat. Will it is for me, I'm old and have to get my kicks somewhere! Wink

There isnt anything wrong with crossplies, and many are availiable, the perennial BT45 being one.

Its just that its difficult to make them cope with high speed ratings, but they are cheaper to produce. Crossplies are good for commuter mahines, old machines and you can get V rated sticky sports x-plies for 250's and 400s.

Loads of cross plies around. Pretty much any rear under a 150 will be a cross ply, and around 110 is the cut off for cross plies on the front.

According to the Bridgestone web site it should have a 110/80 and a 140/80 combination, and they recommend BT45s (cross plies).
