I can understand haggling on second hand bikes, but can you haggle on the price of brand new bikes?

I did, I got messed about by the dealer and so I requested that I have the bike cheaper and you can often get stuff chucked in for free.

Saying that my bike was strictly second hand but with only 43 miles on the clock. Smile

Unless you're buying a model where demand exceeds supply then don't pay the full asking price advertised on the bike.

Choose the bike you want then shop around dealerships UK wide using MCN and also via the internet to get an idea of what the cheapest price available is. Ask what their 'best price is' or if they can match/undercut what you've seen elsewhere.

Rule number 1 is 'don't feel embarrassed' The dealer isn't doing you a favour by selling you the bike, YOU'RE the one with the cash and the dealer wants your custom (despite what he/she might say), it's not the other way around.

A lot of it will depend on which bike you are looking at. If it's a new popular model that the dealer is selling quickly then why would they bother giving you a discount? However if it's the end of a model range, an unpopular bike, or there is a new version about to come out and they have got the model and colour you want on their showroom floor then haggle away.

You can also improve your chances by buying a bike in the middle of winter, going in at the end of the month or sales quarter and make a few visits to the dealer before deciding to buy. Also once you decide which bike you want shop around on the phone to a few dealers then go back to your dealer with the best price and ask if he can match it, I saved nearly £800 doing this. Buying a pre-registered bike will save you some money, steer clear of demonstrators though.

Also see if you can get a few extras thrown in, 1st service free (can be expensive on some bikes), lock and chain or an alarm. The dealer will often give you these as part of the deal at a godd price if they think it will clinch the deal. You will not usually get a discount from a BMW dealer and solus dealers have less flexibility than independent dealers.

I'm going to have a look at a new SV650, what with the 0% deal they are doing until August. I'd imagine they are flying out showrooms at the moment and don't need sales that badly to start knocking lumps off the price. I'll ask about an alarm / data tag and restrictor Thumbs Up

my advice would be to call a few Dealerships in the area and play them off against one another. Start with money off and then go for a tank of gas, free jacket, hat etc. Dont be afraid to get them involved in a phone auction as im sure that near the end of the month they have targets to hit and maybe you will be lucky enough to call the dealership thats desperate for this deal. Good Luck and remember their not doing you a favour by selling you a bike, your doing them a favour by buying the bike through them! Very Happy

Edit: sorry Just repeated what tintin said! Embarassed

Most dealers have monthly targets to achieve, thats sales of bikes and not always profit.
Go towards the end of the month and make an offer. dont ask how much just say I want that bike and this is how much. You will be surprised how many will take the offer.

There can be interesting deals around the time the reg changes as well as when the model changes.

At one point last year, George Whites were doing brand new SVs for £3000 cos they were last years reg and they wanted rid. As long as you wanted it in silver.

Yes, I haggle with pretty much everything i think is overpriced! Especially when there are so many other places to buy certain products.

As tintin says the best deals are to be had in Winter/very early spring. Having said that 0% finance is very attractive. The best approach is to go to more than dealer & play them off against one another. Weekdays are better than weekends & rany dyas better than sunny days. The end of the month is better than the beginning and with new 'old' models you can get some good deals.
