What's the deal with this then??? How well do they check the bike over before they accept it??? Would they pick up for example the bike jumping out of 2nd into neutral when the revs are high???

lots of places will just look at the bike and offer you a standard crap price.

For example; years back I went into Infinity, I knew one of their mechanics and he told me my Honda Bros 400 was worth £1300. But in the negotiations with the sales people they offered me £375 for the Bros as trade-in against the sv.

As it was I ended up finding a better sv than they were offering for less mileage, younger and better overall condition in a private sale and did eventually (4 mths later) sell the Bros for £1300 as my friend had advised.

Never ever listen to a salesman...he/she has never got your best interests at heart, they want their commission and thats all.

Well they've gave me an over the phone quote of around £1200 which i'm MORE than happy with. I can imagine that would drop dramatically if the gear box problem was discovered.

When I part ex'd my Hayabusa, they let me go off to test ride the new bike for a couple of hours, whilst they checked over my bike. They offered me £200 below what the glasses guide said it was worth (due to fairing damage). Apparently it cost them over a £1000 to repair the bike Laughing

Yeah like Clanger says, you are guaranteed to get a shit price however you will probably get the same price regardless of whether your bike is any good or not. A mate of mine recently managed to part-ex his old Fiesta despite the fact it broke down weekly and was really in need of a trip to the breakers. It did look alright though, which is probably why he got away with it. You can be pretty sure they won't be arsed to take into account much more than how it looks and what the mileage is.

Not all dealers give crap deals

I bought a 125cc Varadero from Tippetts with the intention of doing a trade in as soon as I passed my test. So 6 weeks and 1k miles latter I was given a trade in price only £450 less than I paid for the bike plus I was able to wrangle a top box alarm heavy chain and lock, heated grips, 12v power point and first service and still paid £200 less than the list price for my CBF600s.

But then I bought in January when I bet sales must low and agreed the trade in price then witch I am very happy to say they honoured in March when I did the actual trade in.

Thing is I when to several other dealers asking about trade in for my Varadero and the best offer was 2k under what I got for it at Tippetts.

So shop about and be prepared to say No and walk away and you will find good deals.

Hi

If it is a fairly cheap bike then the dealer will not care too much. They will just offer you a low price and then offload it through the auctions.

All the best

Keith

I recently part ex'd my old Bandit 600 for my 05 CBR600RR
I had taken real good care of my Bandit and when I first went to enquire about part ex'ing without them seeing the bike they offered £1200 for it, which was way too low... took it in the following week for them to look at and I took the driving seat by looking really keen on buying the CBR600RR but also looking really not keen on part ex'ing the bike, as if you look like you just want rid then they will offer you a bad price... the fella took me aside and said that they would give me £1600 for the Bandit, so I accepted... I would have got maximum £1700 if I had sold it private

just look out for yourself... at the end of the day, they make a killing on the commission... and if there is a minimum price (within reason) that you are willing to sell at then they will try their hardest with head office to meet that price.

Hi

Used price guide is probably what you would get privatly, so knock a fair amount off that for what a dealer would offer. A direct swap would not surprise me, possibly with a bit of bargaining either way.

All the best

Keith

My sister just bought a new renault clio, she traded in her ford KA for £1400.
I told her she was being completly ripped off and it was worth at least £2200, and she said ''yeah but they said it was 'rusty' and not very good'' Liar

two weeks later she spots her old KA on sale in the garage next door for £2600!

not bad for a 'rusty' car Exclamation

It odd you say that

I always got more in part exchange than I would in a private sale be it a bike sale or a car.

I always put it down to them pinching a little from the profits of the new sale some thing they can’t always do for cash buyers.

Hi

They do just play around with the figures. You would get a better deal just buying the bike, although some dealers will not admit that. Charlotte is getting her ZZR600, and they were quite happy to say that it was priced at £2000, or £2200 with a trade in.

Years ago I had a car which I was toying with upgrading. They offered me £1500 for it (private sale I would have got £2000 at the very least, probably nearer £2500), yet they had one on sale in the showroom of the same age and mileage, about the same condition (exterior marginally better, interior marginally worse) and the less valuable hatchback rather than estate for £4000.

They have to make money somewhere, and have to cover their costs for the warrenty, etc, and on any older bike which they will dispose of through the auctions then they will just assume a nominal value.

All the best

Keith

the dealers use a guide called cap(which is short for catalogue of auction prices)the price's in there are the average of national auction price's and it costs about £40 per month to subscribe.

After asking them a part ex price ask if they'll do a discount for no part ex,sometimes they'll drop a bit as they odviously have a profit marked up on the bike you are buying if they think they'll be stuck with your bike they might drop a few quid on the bike they are selling rather than get stuck with a bike they may have to take a loss on.

Against a new bike(or car) you get a reasonable trade in in my experience.
If buying a used bike too it never seems too good a deal!

They don't make much turning them over, bear in mind the bike'll need a full service usually and maybe tyres, sitting in the showroom for weeks effectively costs them money too.
