First drop of the GS today
Good news though no damage just my pride. Starting off in to a U turn and a Jag came down the road doing about 50 (30 limit) I braked put my foot down but the camber on the road caught me out abit and by that time the bike was pitched and I couldnt stop it falling.
Took me two goes to pick it up which i was happy with (i am a light weight).
Can everyone else pick up their bike? ____________________ "no I didn't steal it that's just the way I ride" |

I picked mine up with relative ease after some twat knocked it over. Knees bent, straight back, good solid grip of clip on, drive with the legs. Easy when you know how! ____________________ Its a lovely day, just wait until some bastard spoils it. |

I read some article in MCN not long ago about it......
Couldnt remember what it said though so went for the brute force option. Best bit was there were some removal men that just stood and laughed.... great.
At least now i know i can do it ____________________ "no I didn't steal it that's just the way I ride" |

That was part of the reason for getting the GS I knew I would drop my first bike or crash it. So i just hope i don`t do both . ____________________ "no I didn't steal it that's just the way I ride" |

My handlebars only came off because I highsided at 70mph
There was amazingly little damage considering. I fixed* it for 45 quid.

And yet one of the heaviest bikes is also the easiest to pick up after a drop.
Honda Goldwing, you just need to rock the back tyre into contact with the ground then hit the electric reverse. The bike pulls itself back onto the wheels. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

My bike has a habit of silently falling over while im not looking. I remember the first day i re-assembled her, i put her on her stand (consisting of two breezeblocks). The paint was still pretty fresh so was fragile, went inside for a cuppa, came back out and it was lying on the ground. All the weight on the bike is in the engine and it is extremely light and quite low, just bent down, grabbed her by the seat and the bars and lifted with my legs. Great big gash in the tank and the rear subframe's paintwork...but nothing permanent ____________________ Will work for petrol

pretty sure i'm winning on the heavy bike area only had to pick my cx up once (sidestand not as down as i had previously thought) @260kg odd is a bit hard work.. but goldwings i think push 350kg... can't be allot of fun..
Incidentaly there will be a section soon where you will have to pick up an er5/cb500 or equivilent on the test. ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

lol, ive had my kymco hypster for about 2 years now, it must only weigh about 150kg, but i managed to drop it doing a tight u-turn into my driveway! turned too tight, and just kinda fell over, much to the amusement of the 5 or 6 children standing watching me! ____________________ My Bikes - - - Royal Enfield 500 with sidecar, VFR800, CBR600FX,

Touch wood, the only times my bike's fallen over (in the back of lorries and so on) there's been a bunch of lads who've had her back on her wheels before I've even had a chance to say 'let me have a go'.
I reckon it's all down to technique (kinda like the centrestand thing that I know lots of people have trouble with) - being taught how to lift a bike on your test is a great idea IMO. It's always been something I've vaguely meant to get some folk to help me try, ie. put it down gently on something soft and be there to catch it if I'm gonna drop it. But I always forget about that so will stick to not dropping it in the first place.
You know what's gonna happen today don't you? |

moving my R6 back into the garage one day i shifted it a bit much and it very nearly went over
it would have pinned me against the wall of the garage and most likely have caused injury.
i shifted my back against the wall and pushed as hard as i could
and it went back upright!!!
bit lucky on that one |

All in all, the best plan is not to drop it in the first place.
I would liken putting a 'picking up your bike' section in a bike test to including a section on 'rolling your car back off its roof' in the car test.
In some cases the latter would actually be easier. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Putting the steering lock on is a big help if it's fallen over onto it's left hand side and lifting using your legs with your back to it is the recommended way as far as I know.
Lifting by the bar closest to the ground with the front wheel turned to face the ground - you're pushing the steering against the stop rather than trying to pick it up with it centralised and wobbly that way. Turning the wheel towards the ground helps to lift the bike a few inches before you start anyway. Getting it onto its stand if you're back on to it is fun.
That method works for a fully fueled F650ST, (173 kg plus 17 litres of fuel) so it should work for anything within reason.
I've dropped my bike plenty of times, but I can lift the whole thing completely off the ground if I have to, so lifting it back onto its wheels isn't exactly tough, and the adrenaline flowing around added to the embarrassement having just binned in front of 50 schoolchildren makes it very easy to pick it up. An unfaired first bike/ first big bike is definately a good idea from the dropping point of view. ____________________ I must not be a troll...
