PostPosted: 00:17 - 14 Jun 2005    Post subject: Second bikes... ? Reply with quote

Hi all, its not through laziness i havent phoned my insurance and checked this, but basically, im going to be at uni next year, in some god forsaken hell hole either in the middle of nowhere or in the middle of gangland knowing my luck. Either way, im loathe to risk my beloved cbr. Also halls residence etc.

So i was thinking, has anyone tagged another REALLY shit bike onto their existing insurance? I used to get premiums of around 250 for 50's when i was 16 on a provisional with 0 NCB (as opposed to now being 18 with full licence and 2 years NCB), so im hoping if i buy some scruffy old cg or sr to ponce about on, make gaskets out of cornflakes, run on wheelbarrow tyres and leave festering under a cover all winter/summer while im back home playing on the cbr, it wont cost me that much.

Also running costs would be a lot cheaper, CBR gobbles petrol, is an expensive crash, makes me speed Brick Wall (no comments of you control your right hand) and id be very paranoid about it. Also would give me something to look forward to coming back home for.

Im looking at spending about 400 including insuring it. I just want something that kicks over, is a reliable runner, but slow and hideous.

Anyone done it like that?

I'm hoping to whack both my 125's on one policy. But I don't know if I'll be rejected being just turned 17 in all.

I think it sounds like a good idea to me, just make sure you have enough money to run it! Smile

I know this isn't totally relevant, but my Mum's got a good bike and a low value bike. F650 fully comp, £120. CG125, £55, TPFT.

Depending on how cheap it is, you might want to not bother with fire and theft cover on it at all, TPO really shouldn't cost you more than £2- 300. I presume you're basically looking for a ratty old 125?

Could always get a fizzy instead. Very Happy

My MZ 125 cost £200, that would be a perfect second bike.

https://www.gaz-racing.co.uk/bike/MZ%20(Small).JPG

The 250 version was only £12.57 more than the 125. And would be slightly more live-with-able.

https://www.gaz-racing.co.uk/bike/DSCI0016%20(Small).JPG

And on the subject of insurance, I've got TPFT on my XJ, costing me about £600 a year, and I've got TPO insurance on any other bike, as long as someone else has insurance on it, and it's owned by someone else.

Therefore, V5 in my dad's name, he insures it for some ridiculously low amount (full no claims, IAM test pass, 52y/o) and bingo, I rag it around.

You take that back!!!!!!!!! It's the devil!

Id never have another low capacity two stroke, bleurgh

Nah, i wouldnt put it on tpft by choice, but i imagine attaching a shitey 4t 125 onto my existing premium (with 2 years ncb) would be cheaper then a seperate insurance with 0 NCB (cant use NCB on 2 policies) for TPO.

Also i'll only be tagging it on for 6 months ish, rather then paying for a full year (started insurance for cbr July/June ish, will get bike locally when i start uni in sept).

I dunno, ill phone up my underwriters and harass them. I need to double check i can fuck about sending them documents a week or two, havent got the time atm for running around.

Exactly like them, something cheap, tatty, but bin-able quite merrily. Specially things i can merrily just park up outside of parties and not spare a second thought until early afternoon the next day when i get up.

Wouldnt do the, get father to insure and get named, routine. Thats like cheating :p

Well, the 125 was only £300 for me to insure at 17 with 0NCB, passed my CBT that day.

You should be fine with 2 NCB and being that bit older.

They're very binnable, I put the 125 in a ditch, and all it needed were some new bars, a good excuse for some renthals.

The 250 is suprisingly nippy aswell, no-one's going to nick it, cheap as chips to run. Perfect.

And when you get bored,...make it a race bike.

Ok, I have experience of this. You want a second bike to be over 200cc.

I have a multi bike policy (you would probably have to change your current policy to one of these), if the guy on the phone tells you you need two policies (which some of them do), call him an idiot and phone someone else. It costs me between 10 and 20 quid to put another bike on it. I insure my MZ660 as the main bike, it cost £11.60 to put my Jawa 350 on it and £18 to put my GPZ on it.

When I went to put my H100 on it I was told they wont accept bikes of less than 200cc on that policy. There is only one policy that does and it was a LOT more expensive.

Another point is that if you are moving to a scummy area full of thieves, a bike of 125cc or below has the life expectancy of an unattended bottle of buckfast at a Rangers match. They tend to leave bigger bikes alone.

Superdream or MZ250 would fit the bill nicely.

Thumbs Up

Your a good lad really arent you mate Thumbs Up

Laughing Yeh i'll have a shifty about, had originally thought 125, but come to think of it, anything less then 200 would drive me nuts. Would prefer a single/twin though... anything around 15-20 bhp would be quite cool.

Any well handling, cheap as shite, 15-20 bhp+ bikes you know of? I imagine an old cb 250 would be easy to get hold of for well under 300. Will certainly try out the cornflake gasket on whatever i get anyway, so im sure your fetish will be tried at some point.

Not worried about image one bit, long as its not obviously open to insult (i dont want a luminescent purple/mauve/pink scooter for instance) and will stand for abuse.

Could get an eastern block ex army thing... That would be amusing.

MZ police special Thumbs Up Laughing

There are a few in the country, I've seen them.

https://web.axelero.hu/furman/m05.jpg

As I have said before, and Gaz has confirmed. MZ 2-strokes were originally built as race-bikes in the 60s, they just haven't changed much since. The handling is not bad, the brakes let them down though, more recent ETZs have discs. It would slow you down a bit if nothing else Wink

60+mpg easy out of an MZ 2-stroke and the injector ones will run on lawnmower grade 2-stroke oil at about 60:1.

You would be hard pushed to find a more frugal bike when it comes to running costs.

The main bearings usually need replacing at 60k miles or so.

I always liked the CB250RS, nice wee bikes. Anyone I have spoken to that used to have one wishes they hadn't sold it. A little bit different too, twin-port single, sound fantastic with a loud exhaust.

I really must take the rocker cover off mine sometime to see how many exhaust valves it has, whether they did actually bother to redesign the cylinder head beyond just splitting the exhaust port into two. I'd probably need a new rocker cover gasket knowing my luck though.

I had a Honda CD200 'benly' when I was 11. It was obviously off-road but it was an awesome bike for abusing. It only ever needed spark plugs and was so damn reliable. Good on juice too. Would only do about 60 mph though. Smile Ahh those twin chrome exhausts. Mr. Green

The 2 stroke-ness of them is what makes it so fun! And they are very cheap to run. I used to get 200km out of £6's petrol on the 125.

Havn't ridden the 250 enough to find out yet.

And yes, the brakes are SHOCKING. The rear drum is actually better than the front disk on my ETZ.

Don't buy a CD benly, or indeed any of the hondas from that era with a pressed steel frame. The frame rots away then they snap in half when you go over a bump. They have built-in rust traps throughout the frame design.

I'm looking for a cheap bike to use a second bike. Like you say, I've got a sports bike, and I've had fun on it, but I want to use it more as toy. I was thinking of going the trials bike/motorcross route (I don't know the difference) but I want four stroke, mainly because I'll forget to put two stroke oil in every time I fill up, or however often you have to do it. I admit, I've never ridden a two stroke, but I've heard they're unreliable, though, probably mainly from abuse. Confused

I was thinking Suzuki DR400, but there's no second hand ones about. Sad

If you're looking for a runabout to take whatever you throw at it why not something like the GT550? Little maintenance as shaft drive, insurance should be very cheap and if required bits can be got from any breakers for pennies. It also meets the requirement of not being the latest plastic wrapped missile so not desirable to be knicked.
