Seems like most people pass second time, and I'm wondering if I should take the "free lessons if you fail" option. Also I'm probably going to take a week off work and travel home to Scotland to do it so i would kind of need to pass first time.

I paid something like £450 for a 'garunteed pass' thing, including CBT, theory 4 days training and the test.
It would have given a free day's lesson, but i'd have had to pay for the actual test. but i passed first time anyway Smile

no lessons, passed 4th time. one of those fails was the bikes fuckup fault tho.

so it cost me about 170 quid all in, still cheaper than a days training and test down here.

The free lessons if you fail isn't all it appears.
Not only do you have to pay the £50ish for the test but they also wanted £50 for the hire bike (DAS so 500cc). Whihc meant it cost me £100 Evil or Very Mad

That's exactly what I did, and I failed first time. Was a bit pricy having to get up to Aberdeen again to do the second test (and have another days training) but since I passed I didnt care Smile

It's deffo one to think on - technically you could do that and if you fail, sit it again down here, but it's kinda nice to know the test route, know the bike, know the instructor. But then if you can get a midweek cheapo easyjet flight or something, it's not too bad.

oh additionally...

since you've been riding for a bit, you could spend your lessons learning how to pass your test rather than having to learn how to ride as well.
that's got to work in your favour, so i reckon you'd have a good crack at a first time pass.

I passed second time round. Even though I got NO minors on my frst attempt, dosy bint here put her foot down on the U-turn!

Skived three days off work, had lessons each day and then the test including bike hire. I didn't pay for the second test (the guys at the shop know me), was about £200 in total including my theory test.

Passed my car test first time, and that cost me nothing! Wayhay! The joys of having a bf whose father is a driving instructor!

Your right but here to ride you only have to pass an outdated written test and you get a learning permit which allows you to ride for a year before taking the riding test, it doesn't make much since. The riding test was designed in the 70's and the only bikes which are capable of passing are sport bikes, the cruiser guys get passed even though their bikes cannot make it through the course. the place I took my test you have to ride 80 miles to get there on one of the most dangerous roads in California so I guess the guy figures if you made it there you can ride.
