Change the spark plugs.......
Then sell the bike to someone who know how to look after a high performance 250cc two-stroke. you shouldn’t own a bike like a KR1 unless you know what you are doing, they are very fragile and dangerous bikes when they are not looked after or rode correctly. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

Hi
Check the fuel filters (including the crude one in the tank). Drain the fuel tank and check there is not water in the bottom of it. Balance the carbs. Check that they have sold you the right plugs.
Also, not sure about the KR1S, but the KIPS power valve on the old KMX125 was apparently easy to reassemble so that it worked in reverse (giving high rev port timing at low revs and low rev port timing at high revs). Not likely but could cause hours of bafflement it that has happened.
The bike might need more than that, but generally give everything a good clean out first.
All the best

when the KIPS vavles are set up wrong or loose they don,t really effect the bike till 8,000 (7,000 with the KR1), its always good to de-coke them ever thosand and check postions every 100-300 miles (they love to un-screw them selfs, and the vavles/linkages are very expensive).
if you do take the linkages apart: short linkage goes between the centre two vavles, and the cap whch sits on top the the vavles should have the screws entering through the countersunk side and through the shaped side of the vavle. this is how they should be set up.
a few small notes about the bike:
pistons should be changed every 10,000 miles
only run on fully sysnefectic two-stroke oil (TTS for example)
get a steering damper/bracket for it
KR1 runs on BR9ES and the KR1S runs on BR10ES plugs
these guys are one of the very few who still stock alot of KR1S parts https://www.cradleykawasaki.co.uk/
the only differents between the KR1 and the KR-1S are the: frame/wheels/top end/swingarm/fairing/exhausts/moment KIPS vavles open/KR-1S is faster.
a on-line workshop manual for both the KR1 and the KR1S can be found at: https://turing.une.edu.au/~ashley/kr1/
and there is a very good KR1/KR-1S forum: https://www.kr-1s.net/forum/ ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

AFAIK the KR1/S uses an electrically operated KIPS valve system, instead of mechanical. The KMX can be assembled wrongly, but there are punch marks in the top of each valve drum, that should align with the front of the operating rack, when its assembled correctly.
I agree with previous comments, that if your not very mechanically minded or have much experience of performance 2strokes its best not to have a a bike like a KR1. If you do manage to get it running a bit better it could still be dangerous, and id never trust an old nearly race tuned 2stroke, without giving it a full re-build first. Theres nothing worse than distrusting an old 2stroke and having to ride around paranoid with your hand over the clutch all the time!
Hell it'd be enough to make me want to buy a 4stroke almost! |
