Should I Take Lessons Or Just Test?

soon do be getting rid of my damn restriction and "L" plates lol
i have been riding around for about 2 months now, am fine with everything, so do you think i will need lessons or just go straight for a test?
if you voted lessons then why?

I'd get a couple of hours lessons, just to cover the 'how they want you to do things for the test' stuff. Then go practice for a few days, then do the test.

i had only been on my bike for a few weeks (ridden before though) before i got a lesson, she only picked out two little faults but it gave me the extra confidence for the test so it was worth it.

i'd say just go for a lesson a day or two before your test and you should be fine, if you feel confident just now, which you must do otherwise you wouldn't have posted this then you should be ok, but getting a lesson in it may pick up on a fault you're unaware of but at the very least might give you the extra confidence for the day.

your own bike, a one or two hour lesson, what's that about 15 - 30 bucks..

A lesson in the area where your doing the test would be advantagous.
A good instructor will be able to advise you about what the instructor will be looking for.

Make sure you do take a few lessons as like you when i was thinking about doing my test i knew i could do everything ie u turn etc but they want you to do it how they say to i took 2 days training with the test on the second day, make sure you know the procedures for pulling away from junctions,left turns, right turns etc then just practise

why not get a book that tells you what you need to know and then go and practise what they say.

I reckon you can get through your test without lessons, so long as you learn when to do shoulder checks (read this post https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=27360&highlight=test)

and just remember: for u-turns, do lots of observation + lifesaver, and for emergency stop - front brake first, then rear brake, then clutch in just before stopping.

I would just take a couple of hours before the test. There's bound to be a couple of old habbits that you're doing. Also, the instructor can go through what the examiner is likely to ask you.

Saying that - I did my test last week, and it wasn't hard. I guess it depends on how much a couple of lessons will cost to whether or not it's worth it. I did the direct access course, which was 2 full days. Prior to that, I've never ridden a bike on the road before (except CBT). I don't think you'll have much to worry about.

An instructor will also know where the test route is, and it doesn't hurt to go round and note anything weird, what the speed limits are, that kinda thing.

I was riding for 6 months, then I had 3 hours of lessons the day before my test.

I would never recommend you go for a test cold. Although I was lucky and I didn't have any major bad habits to get out of.

So a day's course would probably see you fine.

And to whoever said you've only got the test fee to lose, that's still £40!

I did just the same as you, did cbt got the L plates and went out for 2 months on a CG (F**** ace loved it).

I just booked my test and I was just going to wing it, but I booked 2 lessons with the riding school.

Okay I could ride, there was no problem there. But he took me round Halifax, made sure I was doing everything correctly and he took me on all the test routes.

And the one thing that made it worth while, he took me to a strange junction were the examiner likes to fail. He said listen to what he says (The examiner says go straight ahead) . Now if you saw this junction you'd signal left, then 20 yards later signal right (Thats wrong).

For that very reason the lessons were worth it, I would have never done it like that. Nor does anyone else.

To be fair, I don't know your age, i'm old(33) and have 16 years of road experience.

But if I needed a few hours.....
