Hi,
Decided that it would probably be a good idea to get some form of breakdown cover. Had a look round and it all seems a little worthless until you pay £70+. So I thought I'd come here and see what you lot have, and how much you pay for it? Also, experience with it - are they any good or what?
Thanks in advance Thumbs Up

International Breakdown.

£68, covers you whatever the vehicle, rider, driver, passenger, pillion. Takes you to your destination. Includes trailers and caravans towed.
Always get a flat bed truck (so can always take a bike).

Bennets Insurance provide my breakdown cover.
When my chain snapped, they arrived and took it to garage. Smile

Not sure what else they do or I need.

I got mine with motorcycle direct, not had to use it yet though, but apparently they'll bring you home, or put you up for the night if you're too far away.

Beware though, a friend of mine had breakdown cover, and if you were further than 10 miles away you got charged.

So it ended up fairly useless.

Yep, this is exactly what I've found with the sub £70 cover availiable. Almost entirely worthless Thumbs Down

In my experience would avoid the AA if possible.
It's nice that they cover you so you can be driving/riding or even a passenger.
However, a few years ago broke down in car and got sent a van even though I told them it needed recovery (but they don't believe you have any mechanical knowledge). Then they have to send a recovery truck. Over 1 hour wait for the van and over 2 hours for the truck.

Broke down on bike and insisted they send something capable of recovering it. I think they use a lot of local garages/recovery services now but that still took about 2 hours (because they had to get the trailer for the bike Rolling Eyes). The guy who turned up for that just said he'd put it straight on the trailer ...because you probably know more about fixing these things than I do. What was taking the piss was while waiting a proper AA van just went straight past.

Recently the missus starter motor broke so AA took to their local repair place (they use what was the service side of Halfords). The jokers their had the car for 3 days without even looking at it. Then after poking into action tried to find a replacement part at 3:30pm on a Friday Rolling Eyes. Needless to say they failed Mad

So, taken as a whole, IMO avoid the AA.
That's not saying you won't have similar problems with anybody else Wink
Read the small print as well for whoever you decide to go with. I know the AA only lets you call them out for free so many times in a given period. They also charge if they're called out to fix the same fault. Checking if there's any international breakdown cover may also be worth it if planning a trip outside the UK.

As its not classed as abroad as they have the AA over there.

Only reason im with them.

All experiences with the AA have been fine for us, couple of bike break downs including vintage bikes! My mum has been a lifemember for about 20 years though and she signed me up this year to cover both bikes and cars, hope i don't need the buggers!

My mum was a long term member of the AA.

She was what I believe they should classify as 'high risk' ; lone female, on a bike.

The recovery promised didn't turn up.
She eventually had to leave her bike where she was, make her own way home then get to the bike the next day when they sent someone.
She's still with them I think Brick Wall.

Currently with NCI Biker Rescue
As the name suggests they rescue bikers and their bike. And its their policy to send a motorcycle recovery specialist if possible to get you on your way, if thats not avalible they send a vehicle capable of recovering the bike there and then.

And its quite cheap, I payed £45 for Vehicle based Comprehensive cover.

One point I just noted from the NCI site.
Recovery following an accident is not classed as a breakdown so you need to buy the extra cover. Worth checking that for whoever you decide to go with.

HTH Thumbs Up
