A 500cc bike with L plates on?

There were two bikes that went past me yesterday. The bike in front i think was an instrutor and was on a 500cc bike with L plates. The bike behind was a 125 with L plates.

Im not 100% sure if the guy on the 500 was an instructor but they both had high vis yellow jackets on.

How come he had L Plates on a 500cc bike?

Rider on their DAS course. Can ride a 500cc but MUST be accompanied by an instructor.

I've seen instructors hop on learner 500's if their bike is out of action, nowt wrong with that.

You can ride any bike as long as you are accompanied by a instructor.

Isn't there a limit to the BHP or KwH output it has.

I *think* for the DAS there a minimum of 45bhp, but I'm spretty sure I wouldnt be able to roll up to test centre on an R1 with L's on and get a greeting smile. Laughing

Taken from DVLA website...

Quote:
So that learners aged 21 or over may practise for the large motorcycle test, they may ride any motorcycle on the road which exceeds the UK learner specification but only when accompanied (on another motorcycle) by an approved motorcycle instructor. The practical test may only be taken by riders aged 21 or over and completed on a motorcycle of at least 35kW (46.6bhp). When this test is passed the rider can immediately ride any size motorcycle without learner restrictions.

So you could roll up on an R1 to do your test, or go out on a lesson with an instructor as long as he accompanied you throughout i.e. met you at the place the bike was kept and 'dropped you off' at the end of the lesson.

Fancy doing your test on one... U turns would be interesting. As would be the first overtake you went to do.

Ah apologies, I thought there was an upper bhp limit, and a 500cc limit.

I knew it had to make at least 46.something bhp though.

Rock on, DAS on an R1.

definitely makes at least 46bhp...
