Following from Jimster's thread on instructors advice, do you feel that they should be calm and pleasant when you have made an error, or let you know by telling you in a firm voice?

there's no need to 'shout' or be 'firm' with you although if you do something really stupid/dangerous then i can understand why they would.. other than that you're there to learn and they might put people off or make them nervous by being too 'firm'

I think it depends on the student, a good instructor should be able to suss out what works best with each person, within reason. Some people learn well by having someone bollock them for each mistake as it motivates them not to do the same thing twice, I prefer to have someone point out what I'm doing right and what I can do to improve. I did my CBT with one instructor who just seemed to get exasperated and angry every time somebody made a mistake, which didn't help me learn at all. I changed to a different training school for my DAS where the instructor would pull me over if I made a mistake and we would discuss what went wrong and what I would do if the same situation arose again. It just seemed a much calmer, more mature way of conducting business, and it worked well for me. However, I'm sure there are a number of people who would prefer a sterner instructor as this would suit them better.

I have already stated my feelings on this subject in the other area. I think learning to ride a bike should not just be a walk in the park for anyone as it is a dangerous thing. It's not so much riding the bike it's the raod we ride on.

I don't think it's right to shout but giving instruction with a firm voice definalty. When you stop for a rest or finish the lesson most instructors will ask why did this happen and then run through how it should have been delt with etc.
