Knocking sound...

Sounds like its coming from the front of the bike. Only get this in 1st and 2nd gear mainly, but only at very low revs. The chain is starting to look a little slack also, I initially thought it was this, but the noise seems to be coming from the front. I'm at a loss to work out what it is?!

Check the chain first, I got the very same noises on my ZXR, sounded like it was coming from up front Confused but turned out to be the chain...

So tighen your chain up and lube it properly then see (HOPE) the noises go away Laughing

I had a noise which sounded like it was from the front, from a loose chain, it was smacking on the swingarm in low gears, particularly when deccelerating.

I assume the longer I leave it, the more chance of the chain snapping? I have no idea how to tighten the chain up, don't even think I have the tools! Anyone in north london fancy giving me a hand? lol Wink

T'is an easy job. Find out how much slack there should be in the bottom run of the chain, an inch and a half perhaps from top to bottom; loosen the rear axle nut, undo the tensioner locknuts, screw the tensioner bolts in until the chain is the right tension (both sides in by the same amount to keep alignment), then tighten the locknuts and the axle nut.

You'll need a few spanners. 18/19 mm for the axle nut, 12/14 or so for the tensioner nuts and bolts. A rubber/ leather hammer can be handy for hitting things. Adjustable spanners will work fine.

Of course, that's assuming that it's the same layout as my rather elderly design machine.

A Haynes/ Clymer manual is an essential really.

Sort it as soon as possible, stretched my chain from shit wheelies during the summer, kept putting it off til it snapped at 50mph taking a huge chunk out of my crankcase and smashing the water pump, speedo thing and front sprocket cover to bits. Cost me £160 to get the crankcase fixed, new waterpump, new sprocket cover, £130 for chain and sprockets. Plus £180 i payed for an engine that i didnt need in the end. Honda quoted me £1500+ to fix it!, so tighten it or get a new chain if its at the end of its tether. Always check mine now.

Go allong your chain bit by bit and check all the links are moveing, it sounds exactly like what my bike has not i.e. a siezed link Sad not the end of the world but it will eat your chain if you dont get it sorted...

Giveing it a really good clean and re lube will hopefully sort it out... clean out the front sprocket houseing while your cleaning/adjusting, scarey how much crap builds up in there! (even found a 6mm bolt in mine Shocked)

thank f*** for that, my NSR has been making this noise from the same place, and same gears, and my chain is slacker than a prostitue lol replacing soon though!! just out of interest apart from wearing the sprockets at an alarming rate what else does a highly slack chain do damage to???

It can smash into your alternator cover if you let it snap. This happened to my brother. Luckily the crank case isn't damaged so I can fit the replacement cover without any bother. (£25 off eBay).

Flailing your leg off is another possible result...

Not to menting the whole wheel locking up buisness...

Keeping your chain and tyres is about the most important thing to check on the bike, and your brakes...

Also makes your gear changes a bit crappy and reduces your bikes performance and mpg believe it or not!

Don't worry too much unless its over 1inch or so (i think), if it is then thats not good.
