Suzukis Gs500 fast idle problem

Hey guys. I had a question about some trouble i am having with my suzuki GS500.

I am a relatively new biker and i got my GS around a year ago. However, 6 months into it I had to stop riding for a few months because I went abroad to study. well basically my problem is:

Ever since i have come back to the bike, it starts fine, but whenever i give the engine a little gas, it will continue to rev up until around 5-6k rpm as if i am constantly giving it gas even if the cluch is down.

This won't happen as soon as i start the engine, it only happens when i rev it just a little past 2-3k rpm. The choke is off and seems to be working. However i notice that when i release the choke, the engine will rev up, but when i put the choke back down it doesn't seem to stop reving at the higher rpm that is constistant with a choke.

So basically i can still ride the bike, and when i am in gear with the clutch out the bike goes fine. However, as soon as i hit the cluch down to break the bike will start reving up to 5-6k rpm uncontrollably.

Since i haven't ridden the bike in a while i was thinking maybe the carbs are gummes up?

Any help would be appreciated. I am currently deciding between taking it to a mechanic or maybe putting some engien cleaner in it and seeing how that goes.

your cable is gummed up, or the brip is gummed, or the little rotor on the carbs are gummed. Follow it all through, WD'ing a plenty till its all free'd up!

hey thanks for the fast reply. I just took another look at it, and it seems like the choke isn't responding at all anymore. It feels as if the choke is just constantly open. Not sure what i should do about that.

If its a GS500E/K/F your gonna have to pop and remove the seat and unbolt the tank, lifting alittle to get at and turn the fuel valve off on tank with flat bladed screw driver (pointing either side is off, staight down is on). then you can disconnect the hoses(if you dont, you will have fuel pouring out really fast)

once the hoses are disconnected set the tank down in a safe place, from there, check the cable operations, see how freely they both move. The GS 500 has abit of a problem with cable bind, this can be solved with abit of rerouting easly enough, just take your time with it. You might even need to pull the cables out and give them a thurough lubing and make sure there arnt any burs or stray cable threads binding up.

you say the bike has been sitting for awhile, you might want to check for vacume leaks as well. this will also cause a hanging idle.
