bike missing a beat

Hi,

I recently passed my test (yay) and bought a sv650s as a present to myself. It has developed a problem that gets slightly annoying. When i have been for a ride and i come to stop, the engine kind of misses a beat on the rear cylinder and sometimes cuts out. It does not effect the bike when it's moving just when its idling. Any ideas is great as it seems to be getting worse.

What rpm should it idle at? (in the handbook) and what is the rpm you are running it at. If there's a difference alter the idle speed to the recommended one. Easy enough to do it'll be in the handbook.

It was running at around 1150 which i thought was a bit low so i upped it to about 12500 and it made no difference

seems about right, most are around 1100 plus/minus 100rpm.
If it's a newish bike and still under warranty I'd get them to check it out, if it's coming up for a service get it done so you know air filter, plugs, valve clearances, fuel set up etc are all OK. If not you may want to go through them to check yourself.

I'm new to the forum and new to biking, but I used to dabble a bit with engines and stuff, you know got the old degreee and all that - but found it too cold on workshop floors and moved careers. But I'll have a go at trying to get you somewhere in resolving your problem.

If anybody has this bike and its a common faulty - put your pennies worth in, but I'd start by try to find out if its related to one or more cylinders.

You could start by disconnecting one ht lead at a time and see if the engine sounds any different. If you can take one of the leads off and the engine idle gets no worse then you will know that the problem will be with either the spark, compression or fuel to that particualr cylinder. If found you could try changing the plug on that cylinder or swapping the injectors (sorry not sure if its injection or not - i'm a bit new) or getting a compression test.

If it get no different then the problem might be fuel pressure or a main ht problem or if your a carborated engine I'd have a look at the idle valve or jets.

Failing that check you inlet mainfold for leaks

you then may need at this point to get it connect to somekind of computer (if this doesn't just exist in my fictional head - shrug) to get it fully diagnosed.

Does the SV have twin CDI's or just one?

If it has two, it could be te rear one failing, could also be a cooling issue, or even a carburation issue.

You'll just have to eliminate a few things.
