You do with a car if you passed your test after 1st Jan '97 and you want to pull a larger trailer or caravan.

Sorry, I don't know about pulling a trailer with a bike, but I don't think you need to do an extra test.

2. CAR DRIVING LICENCE FIRST OBTAINED SINCE 1 JANUARY 1997

Drivers who passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 are required to pass an additional driving test in order to gain entitlement to category B+E and all larger vehicles. In addition to the new driving tests, drivers of vehicles which fall within subcategories C1, C1+E, D1 and D1+E also have to meet higher medical standards.

Category B:
Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM and with up to 8 passenger seats

Category B vehicles may be coupled with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM) OR a trailer over 750kgs MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM.

For example:

1.

a vehicle with an unladen weight of 1.25 tonnes and a MAM of 2 tonnes coupled with a trailer with a MAM of 1.25 tonnes could be driven by the holder of a category B entitlement. This is because the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and also the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle.

From the DVLA site.

Looks like you have to take a test if trailer exceededs 750kg. Thumbs Up

TRAILERS TOWED BY MOTORCYCLES

In general, motorcycles are not designed to tow trailers although provision does exist in the Construction and Use Regulations for certain trailers to be drawn. This information is available to drivers and can be found in Section 2 on the counterpart to the photocard licence.

PROVISIONAL MOTORCYCLE HOLDERS

A learner motorcyclist cannot tow a trailer in any circumstances. Section 16 (2) (c) of the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) regulations 1999.

FULL MOTORCYCLE HOLDERS

A full motorcycle holder may tow a trailer even though this entitlement is not shown on the driving licence. However, there are certain constraints on the type of trailers that can be used, these are stipulated within Regulation 84 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulation 1986. There is a wide range of trailer types and many methods of coupling the trailer to the motorcycle. One of the most common used is the "swan neck" coupling. Any enquiries regarding the construction of trailers and methods of coupling should be referred to Vehicle Standards and Engineering 4, Great Minster House, 76 Marsham Street, London. SW1P 4DR.

Basically yes, but you can pull a larger trailer if it's plated laden weight does not exceed the unladen weight of the car, and the total laden weight of car and trailer does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. The requirements are for the manufacturers maximum weights, not what you are actually carrying.

It's pretty complicated, but I think you're unlikely to find a traffic cop who understands the rules very well.

Good find Wantser. Looks like you don't need any extra entitlement on your license but the trailer must be of a certain type. Again, I challenge you to find a traffic copper who knows the law here!
