I have to park my bike outside in a driveway/apartment parking lot and I don't someone to steal it. There is a steering lock on it (it's a Kawasaki Vulcan 800), and I follow the instructions in the manual, but I can't tell if it's locked or not. How do you properly lock and unlock it (and so you'll know it's one way or another)??

The simple answer has to be once you think you have locked it, try to turn the bars (i.e. steer it left/right). If they won't move, you have managed to lock them.

I don't know if it's the same on all bikes, but on mine you turn the handlebars left as far as they'll go, push the key down slightly into the ignition barrell and turn the key one click to the left (two clicks and you put the parking light on).

As PyschoHippy says, if the sterrings locked, you won't be able to turn the handlebars.

Steering locks are next to useless anyway, get a decent chain, disc lock and alarm. When you chain it up make sure its to something like a lamp post that cant be moved.
