I've just bought a Honda CG125. I've checked the service book and it was last serviced at 6000 miles, it now has 10000 miles on it.

What should I replace and how? Does anyone have a PDF haynes manual?

I've never done anything to bikes before, and this is my first bike. I'm not totally new to mechanical things though, I've done a bit of work on cars before.

change the oil and oil filter, air filter, spark plug and the clearances on the valves could do with checking and adjusting.

do they feel soft/spongy?
if so maybe they need to be bled?
if they are firm and feel right compared to your training bike, then i would suggest leaving them alone. though if the bike has been used in the wet/winter i would suggest cleaning the brake pistons, if you feel inclined to as it could save problems happening later with binding brakes

take a look at korns handy guide

The oil filter is a small gauge mesh type, about the size and shape of a thimble, immediately beneath the sump plug. It just needs cleaning in white spirit or similar; it should not need replacement. I imagine you've been changing the oil every 1000-1500 miles anyway?

The valve clearances are set with a simple screw and locknut mechanism. They're set to 0.08mm IIRC, for which you will need feeler gauges. If you're careful, you should be able to reuse the rocker cover gasket, but if anyone has used instant gasket on it before, then you'll most probably require a new one.

Clean the air filter (a foam sock I think) in a big bucket of very hot water, dribble light oil through it and wring it out and massage it through to get a good light emulsion of oil through all the foam.

Brakes want adjustment if they're the drum type, and some light sanding of the brake shoes to remove any glaze which will cause squeaking. Don't breathe the dust!

For the hydraulic type, brake pads should be checked for wear limits, and then lightly sanded to remove any glaze and grease smeared on their backs also to reduce squeaking. Brake fluid will probably want replacing if it is darker than light honey, and otherwise will still probably want bleeding.

Sparkplug replacement is self-explanatory. Check the steering head, wheel and swingarm bearings for play or notchiness. Oiling the speedo, clutch and throttle cables might not be a bad idea either. Grease the swingarm and sidestand pivots, and clean any cut-out switches if they're still attached.

A bally good clean is always worthwhile, even if just to check for any loose fasteners.

Don't wring air filters, press out any excess.

Yes, I should have made that a little more clear. Wringing it like a dish cloth is too vigorous, and twisting it like so is a no no. A gentle squeeze should be enough, or you can hang it out to dry a bit on the line.

I have created a Honda CG125 website, it has lots of information like how to service the bike.

https://hondacg125.awardspace.com/

If anyone is wondering why I am responding to 2 year old posts, try a google search of Honda CG125 servicing, spark plug or oil. They all bring up this thread!

Some one or ones have rated my last post as off topic.
This has resulted in my post being hidden from most people as a result.

If the people responsible do it again, I will report them to the moderator as abusing the system.

I challenge anyone to claim my post if off topic, the topic was everything about servicing the Honda CG125, my post was everything to do with servicing the Honda CG125.

My hidden post is repeated below

Yes and thats what the Honda Owner's Manual tells you to do.
And yes thats for a new plug, not a used one as my website tells you to.

You can also check out the NGK websites and see what they tell you as well.

I have a 1982 CG125

It runs great except;

The turn signals are like snails, when they work. I have to flip on and off manually when turning.

The break light is always on, I think it is a faulty switch, but not sure I I have a general electrical problem given the turn signal problem.

In they Haines manual they talk about a centrifugal oil filter. Is it real important to dismantle the engine to go though the procedure of cleaning that?

i may have more questions

If its the last of the 6v battery ones then its normal

it's the 6V

I keep buying new batteries and charging them and it seems to make no difference.

I hate electrical problems

Is their a main ground somewhere? maybe that needs to be cleaned up. The horn worked once or twice a couple years ago, doesn't work now

I think there is a central problem, I am just not sure where to look.

if your in the south I can help with electrics.

Sounds like a new switch unit, and front brake switch would help - originals wont be much good..

Rear brake switch is adjustable

The filter is the main one. It would be a good idea - it can get full and then is useless. Wouldnt bother with the strainer, its too big to even stop sand - you wont find anything in it!
If you do this, the engine and surrounding frame need to be perfectly clean, so dirt cant fall in!
I think every 30,000 it should be done.
