The SV will still be restricted to 33bhp (assuming you will do that) so the risk will be the same as riding the 250, except the SV will have alot more torque and be generally easier to ride.

Just get the SV or a 400. If you must get a 250 then an RS250 or RGV.

Consider a Honda CB250, or its replacement the CBF250.

Both decent little frugal bikes, good for the newbie, and there not gonna set the world alight and are cheap to run too.

Also consider its Sister bike the CMX250 Rebel, a custom version of the CB250.

There are other 250's 4's, like the Hyosung GT250 Comet, not that well proven at the moment, and hardly any have sold.
Others include the Suzuki GN/TU250X, and Yamaha SR250 both getting long in the tooth now but for a post test bike that your not likely to keep long it might be ideal.

Also instead of a 250 why not go for a 500, they're like labradors really but they can bite when you need them too unlike a 250 4 stroke.

Confused a 250 stroker isnt that horrific mate. Its not gona flip you if your carefull with it... but TBH any bike can flip like that... no need to be scared about the actual riding of the bike as long as you take it easy! If you havent got the confidence to ride a 250 2t then maybe you might want to ride around on what ever you have now for a little longer? Just my Penny Coin Penny Coin but it seems by that post that your scared by the power?

I was looking at 250's a little while ago, as a cheap alternative to a 400 sports... came across a lovely CBR250... was an absolute beauty, the only one ive ever seen. But then realised that the poor thing probably wouldnt enjoy being dragged halfway around the country, 2-up, with luggage Wink

Honda CBR250's and Yamaha FZR250's seem quite punchy for their capacity, but hard to find and the same with parts. Your probably better off going for a restricted 400, you can pick up Bandit 400's which look quite nice, one on ebay at the moment. Kwak ZXR400's seem a good choice for a sports 400, and my favourite, the Honda CBR400 NC29. For a reliable Honda, then the CB400N might be a good choice as a first bigger bike. Also worth considering Honda CB500 as I hear they are quite quick, and handle very well for what they are.

will have to look in the 400's but the 2t 250cc ive been on was a montesa trails so that will explain the scaryness of your first go on a 250cc 2T and going across a field at 40ish (or what felt) . XR250 4 stroke i only stalled once not bad for a first time on 1! im really really bored of my ped! i fall asleep so i will get me test behind me and see what bikes they will let me test ride

I would recommend the CB250 seeing as it's indestructible, does a genuine 80mpg and is nippy around town. But if you're thinking along the lines of an RS125 then the CB250 would be a bit slow and boring for you I guess.

Have you thought about a GS500 mate?

I know they arent the most sexy things on gods earth... but they are a very stable bike to ride, realy easy to pick up. Not gona scare you to death, but will still have enough to show off a bit in front of your mates... realy comfy riding position, and cheap as chips to run.

I have mine for sale at the minute, offers around £800 realy... so cheap as chips, 12months MoT & tax, quite a few appearance mods... check it out in the exchange and mart section. see what you think, i could post a direct link to it if you wish.

Thumbs Up

They're ok, not as fast as the Suzuki RGV, but the daddy of all 250cc s strokes is the Kwak KR1-S. Quick as fuck, and looks bloody nice as well. Although I think the NSR250's MC18,21 and 28 are the best looking 250 2 strokes.

What about a restricted 500 twin?

Then after a couple of weeks you can de-restrict and enjoy the extra punch.

Get something which is 33bhp as standard like a Suzuki Goose 350 or a Honda Bros 400.

a 250 4 stroke isnt necessarily gonna be faster than an rs because the rs is a lot lighter. The rs may handle better too.

the rs does not accelerate well between 0 and 20mph but as soon as you hit the powerband its great

If you arent bothered about performance the cb250 will be cheaper to run.

I'm under the impression that 250cc 2-strokes don't take to kindly to being restricted to 33bhp. The bandit or SV will be good first big bikes to learn on. I'd ignore your friends, you can kill yourself on a moped if you try hard enough, yoy've just got to be a little gentle on that right hand.

Another suggestion would be a GPZ500S, easy to ride, cheap to insure & economical.

I had a kawasaki ninja 250 a while ago, they're not really that common in the uk but it was bullet proof, nippy for a 250 (14k redline if I remember right) and handled really nice.

https://www.bikepics.com/kawasaki/gpx250/

Other than that, if I was you I'd think about one of the more sensible 400's, like a bandit 400, cb-1 or bros, like ste said Thumbs Up

How about a Hornet 250? Quite rare, but I've seen a couple around.

Good looking naked bike, well built, incredible redline, easy to ride, should be around 33bhp (think it's around 45bhp at the crank) and still capable of over a ton.

Hi all im new hear but would like to suggest that you keep your eye out for a japanese market honda vt250 spada as it falls [just] into the power bracket allowed on restrictions and has an all most perfect power to weight ratio to boot,
Although they are a little on the rare side they fetch 8 and 16 hundred puonds depending on condition, They have pretty much bullet proof motor handle great and arnt the most expensive bikes to run (cheapish service parts, tyres and 50-60 mpg),
Ive had mine since febuary this year and have put around 4 grand on it, mine was a real bargain it had been stood for 18 months and was advertised for £400 ono, the woman i bought the bike of had lost the service history so got price down to £200 but general conition suggested the mileage was legit (18.700km) so deals are available if you keep an eye out. Thumbs Up
