Triumph TT600 - Insurance & Second Hand price?

Hi folks,

If you'll excuse the unusual decision Ive recently become interested in buying a TT600 as the replacement for my SZR660.

Reason being that they seem to be available for less than Japanese 600s (relative to the mileage etc) and perhaps more importantly, they all seem to be in great condition- no tacky mods or rusty ones. Im not bothered about the supposed lack of power.

Anyway what im wondering is:

1) Are they really cheaper/lower mileage than japanese equivelants or is it just me?

2) Are they really in better condition- Is this "careful" triumph owners? All the ones Ive seen look like theyre brand new (2001 models)

3) What are they like for insurance? Ill get a few quotes ofcourse but not going to spend hours just to check

Depends on the bike you look at, and your own personal situation.
There are mint examples of every bike, just as there are old shitters.
As to insurance, if you are 40 years old with 15 years experience and NCB it will be fairly cheap. If you are 21, with 9 points and no NCB it will be fairly expensive.
Sorry for my sarcasm, but it's a fairly open ended question.

l was speaking a guy who works for jack lillys (main triumph dealer)
and he was saying about how many problems they have had with the TT600 (mostly early ones) they genrally they have very weak engines and alot of fuel injector problems. compaired to a jap 600,s or the daytona 600/650.

Then again if they are cheaper you can afford a newer one so... Worth noting though.

Hi

They are only very slightly down on power, but not much. Early fuel injection maps were a mess with a big flat spot. They slowly got that that sorted (proper sorting needed a new exhaust and cams I think).

They are certainly cheap. The last ones were being sold for £5000 brand new. Rare to see them for over £3000.

Handling and braking were meant to be really good.

I have a 2002 model which cost me £2800.

This bike had done 1600 miles and is mint. The brakes are fantastic and the handling is sublime. They are very comfortable bikes and rather practical.

I have had no issues with engine power on my bike, and that was after hopping off of a Daytona 955i onto the TT. When thrashed it is VERY quick.

The only troubles I have had is from vibration (lack of throttle body balance due to neglect from the previous owner) and warped clutch plates (again due to neglect from the previous owner.

Bear in mind that I also own a crash damaged TT600 that dropped a valve. I believe this is due to a number of factors, not least of which it had probably been run on its side for quite a while, and had taken a knock hard enough to bend the forks, scrape BOTH sides of the engine cases, rip off both footpegs and even dent the top yoke!

After the Daytona it feels a little dowdy looking and its not a bike to have if you are seriously into image, but it is a fun involving and comfortable bike that can commute tour and scratch with the best of them!

And as I said, there are bargains out there!

Oh and insurance cost me less than £300 per year, but I do have five years no claims...

I've read in a few places that they tend to vibrate, but coming from a 660cc single I seriously doubt i'll notice!

I cant believe you bought a bike with 1,600 miles for £2,800?

Certainly seem like good value for money; Which is exactly what Im after.

I think I'll bear one in mind as a nice alternative to a ZX6R or something.

I know it's an obvious thing to say but a test ride is imperative to ascertain whether the fuel mappings have been sorted if you're considering a second hand buy. If you feel that the throttle response is slightly jerky then (if the purchase is from a trader) I'd ask them to remedy it prior to purchase. Have a look through the Service History and (if you can) try to have a chat with the previous owner (details on the log book) to see if the mappings have been changed.

I bought mine nearly 2 years ago now for about £3800 with just under 2000 on the clock after the previous owner had decided that it was too much of a handfull for him. I think the TT600 did attract an older more discerning biker on its' release due to the Triumph name and the fact that it was really the Company's first venture into the 600 sports bike market.

However as time's gone on and the rumours of the dodgy fuel mapping surfaced (and the big 4 manufacturers improved their competing bikes) the prices tumbled on the TT and there are definately bargains to be had if you're patient enough. As Marjay's experience has proved under £3000 should buy you a very decent second hand one.

Insurance wise I paid £270 (ish) fully comp a few months ago through www.motorcycledirect.co.uk

I would probably buy private on account of it being cheaper and would ofcourse testride.

I think the TT600 has gone from a bike I wouldnt consider to being my most likely choice for my next bike.

As Im only looking to spend low £2,000's (like £2,300 or something.. £2,500 tops): All the japanese bikes in this price range that Ive seen have been around the block a few too many times- whereas the trumpets seem to be spanking new.

Ah well. Maybe Ill get to blag a ride on somebodies at the MotoGP or something.

Daytona 600s, as mentioned before, are an updated version of the TT600, a lot more sporty, and a more capable bike. (Comes from a biased view though, as I own a Daytona 600, but the TT600 would probably out perform me anyway). The only problem is resale. No one wants the things, which is why they're so cheap. Might be worth thinking about if you want this bike for just a few years. Big regret with mine, I doubt I'll get much more than £3k for my bike, and it's a year old. Shame it's got mileage like the Starship Enterprise.

Daytonas are expensive though and my main factor is value for money/low cost.

You reckon you can get a decent Daytona for £3k though? Theyre asking for £4.5k and up on biketrader.

If you find a 03 model (only difference being the front brake line, 03 has single line and 04 has dual line) with a fair few miles on, it should be worth around £3k. I'm starting my 04 with 17k miles on, slight damage at £4k (hoping for more on a trade in for an R1). I think it'd be a case of looking round really.

I guess the problem is, there isn't a great deal of them out there, and most people don't use them every moment they get (average Triumph owner and all).

For what it's worth, all the TT600 owners I know say that the TT600 is a damn fine bike. tt600.org should help you out mate if you want to talk to a few tt600 owners, and daytona600.org for Daytona owners.
