is it not all just common sense the stuff they show you? stuff that you'll learn from experience. Not like their going to show you how to pull off reverse one handed 180 scandinavian flicks to get out of trouble are they!!
For people that have done them what I want to know is what 'specifically' have you learnt that you can't learn from experience?
Only about 40 quid ain't they?
I picture the type of people that go on them are people that will walk down a footpath but only in the middle not to close to the edge of the road and not to close to the grass on the other side incase they slip That's the kind of over safety conscious person I picture benefiting from them tbh if that makes any sense. ____________________ -=[Sam/b]=- cx500's the only way to travel, we do it in style just like jimmy saville

i guess you mean riding course, not driving course. if you do i have been on one with a copper. basically he shows you how he rides and you follow him. shows you the lines that he would take and also the importance of throttle control, meaning you don't actually brake when taking corners. it was quite interesting to hear him say that on one section of road and he was on a call he would be touching 130! where as i would only do it at 80 at a push!

One of the guys I ride with is a police riding instructor. I'd like to bet there's not many on here that could stay with him....including the racers. Riding fast on the road is a different ball game. In most cases people who ride fastre than you on the road are simply taking more risks that you are willing to take. But these guys ride fast and prefectly safe. Their obsevation is second to none. They are going fast when you think it's risky and often going slow when you think you could push on. When they explain why you realise how many risk you've been taking in the past. ____________________ https://hyperbikes.forumsplace.com/ |

I had a really enlightening day the other week, went out with a mate of mine who is IAM.
I learnt a lot just from following him, but whenever we stopped for a cuppa i quizzed him on what i had seen him do.
Like the bike copper, he often went slow when i wanted to go fast and vise versa, however when he gave me his reasons i could see the logic and forethought behind it.
Improving your skills through learning from someone elses experience is a great idea. In my job as a martial arts instructor, it's what people pay me for! ____________________ Space Monkey #7

talk about making something out of nothing mate.
was a question are they useful/worthwhile or is it all common sense. If I thought I knew everything this thread wouldn't exist From the more useful posts I gather that it is worthwhile! You know their is such a thing as being too safety conscious! Their called 40 year old mothers doing 50 down the motorway. That's what these advanced courses sound like to me.
still not heard any specifics as to what they teach you that isn't common sense learnt from experience. ____________________ -=[Sam/b]=- cx500's the only way to travel, we do it in style just like jimmy saville

Common sense aint that common and experience is something you get when you least need it.
I can tell someone who's done an advanced riding course just from following them. Their lines ad road positioning are totaly different to the average rider. ____________________ https://hyperbikes.forumsplace.com/ |

it's like I said, you can't even begin to imagine what you can learn on an advanced course and it is far from pootling around in the middle of the road at 40mph
for a start if you miss an overtake then you'll probably fail
if you don't use the whole carriageway for observation and safety then you'll probably fail
if you don't use the whole speed limit then you'll probably fail
advanced riding is about using the information that is around you to make "reasonable progress" they teach the Police system which is meant to be learnt at sensible speed so that it can be applied at any speed
when I was learning and trying to keep everything going on in my head I found myself dropping to 55 and 50 mph - there really is soooo much to take in that you would normally miss
once it becomes automatic then you can get faster more safely
most advanced riding instructors and examiners are ex police guys who just love bikes and love riding them - they are ex police riders because they have retired with a few million miles under their belts - some of it at silly speeds in all conditions, they can only survive in great numbers because they are trained so well
the big advanced courses (IAM, Rospa, Bikesafe?) use the same system of teaching - although they stop far short of Police pursuit training.
they reckon that a Rospa Gold award is the highest civilian bike riding accolade and is only equivalent to the very first rung on the police riders ladder
So don't assume that because these guys may be older, wear dayglo vests and ride pan euros or beemers that they are slow and boring
give it a go - you have nothing to lose and everything to gain

He's a report on the Bikesafe course I went on:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=52349&highlight=bikesafe
I can honestly say that I thought I was a good rider but that it taught me stuff that, whilst I knew in theory, I didn't use in practice. This was just a brief 'taster' session but I would say it's worthwhile. You probably do ride slower than normal but when we went out it was like an teext book example of every road hazard you will ever encounter - bricks in the road, cow shit, dozy grannies, wet manhole covers with diesel, corners that suddenly tightened, it went on and on... except on this occasion I was aware of nearly all of them. ____________________ The older I get the better I was |

i went on an assesment course at the end of last year
i found that after 25 years of riding it still showed me a few things
and some of my bad points
havent read the polioce handbook ( have a copy) i think if anything it reset my awareness as we do tend to get somewhat lazy.
most i believe run an assesment course, a few pounds doesnt hurt to see if you think you need more
personally have not continud, but thats not to say im an ace rider ____________________ "still no idea where poohsticks bridge is"

I have read roadcraft, several times and it is am extremely useful book. I don't have the time to go to IAM sessions (no, really, I don't) so I've done what I can to improve my riding and I believe that it has worked.
On my daily communte I see examples of stupidity that are downright breath taking, from overtakes that force oncoming cars to take evasive action to one bloke who was too scared to len more than 10 degrees from upright and then screamed off in a straight line.
It's only when you find yourself keeping up with nutters without taking any risks yourself that you suddenly realise that you're not a complete muppet after all.
I still learn though, every day where I think 'I could have done that better', I learn. I think the main problem with a lot of motorcyclists is that they think 'I'm still alive, I must be doing things right'. No, you've just been lucky.
Cheers
